Just reinstalled my printer with a USB connection because the network connection was so undependable, and I'm getting a "Out of Paper" message under Printer Status in the HP Smart app.  Tray 2 (the bulk tray) is full, there are no errors on the printer LED screen, and the printer operates normally and prints fine.  The message goes away when I load paper in the Manual Tray (Tray 1).  Is this really normal operation?  I already know Tray 1 is empty, because I load it manually and it's generally empty, with the door closed.  I can live with the goofiness of the message, because otherwise everything seems to be functioning.  Just wasn't sure if this was intentional by HP, or some strange hardware error....

Make sure you have the paper size and type set correctly on the printer. If you have letter paper, set it for that. The behaviour you are seeing is consistent with your software requesting a paper type that is not loaded in the printer.

Thanks - tried that and it doesn't seem to make any difference.  The only "Out of Paper" error seems to be in the HP Smart app, so I'm wondering if the latest software has changed it somehow.  It is reporting accurately - there's no paper in the manual feeder.  It doesn't specify which paper source is "out," just that the printer is "out of paper," which, in fact, it is not.  When the manual feeder is loaded, even with a single sheet, the message goes away.

I already posted regarding network printing where printer status out of paper but printer led shows ready this issue can be resolve temporary by restart printer spooler of mention system then it continue printing. . .

It may b cause of paper jam or paper not place right for a while . .

I already post about my hp 402 dne printer is it out of paper action

Partially solved.  For whatever reason, this error only seems to appear with the USB connection.  When connected to the network, the printer recognizes that Tray #2 is full, in all circumstances, and ignores the "empty" manual tray.  It only appears with a USB connection when HP Scan Doctor (5.2.1) is run, with the LED screen off, resulting in a "Device Status" error in the Finding and Fixing Problems chain.  When Scan Doctor is run with the printer "On" (LED screen displayed, manual tray with paper in it), the error goes away.  Everything else in the system, including the onboard printer LED screen, otherwise reports correctly that the printer has paper in it, and the printer functions normally regardless.  So I suppose standing by for an HP software update/fix for this mildly interesting quirk.  Or perhaps it's a feature.
