1st. Check the fuser cover first to see if there'e anything dropped into it. You'd better take it off to see more clearly.
2nd. Check the sensor to see if it seats at its right way. And if the sensor itself is too long or too short it'll get problem.
See into the machine to the left side of central part there's a hole where the sensor seats at and it stick out of the black plastic bottom part of the PIU (Paper Input Unit).
Check the sensor itself (it stick out of the hole) to see if it is too short or not - hard to tell the difference.
It should move back and forth when paper goes through.
If it's too long or too short the paper will stop en-normally. Most of the time it'll get shorter and shorter if you have a large number of printing.
If it can wave from left to right easily then it's a problem. You may have a loosen feed-roller where it is fasten to may be broken because of it's made of plastic so it's broken easily when time goes by. You'll need to fasten it tight enough to the PIU.
( The feed-roller is fastened to the bottom of PIU.)
I often use hot melt adhesive in between to make them stick together.
3rd. If you can see the fist line of text printed on the paper is too low (too much space before it) or missing some of lines (without any space before the first line of text) then you have a worn out feed-roller needed to be replaced ot to be modified.
The feed-roller which can be seen in the picture before which the roller in red color is the one.
As you can see in the picture the left one is modified and the right is the original one.
I wrap both roller with heat shrinkable tube to make it thicker and it'll work nicely for a long long time.
It's black color in the picture and the above mentioned is red which has been fitted into the PIU on HP 6L.
One thing needed to mention is not leave too much in both inner side or else it'll hard to turn when it is put back to its place.
The PIU is the big black part on the rear side of the frame. Four screws on it.
Take it with care because it's frangible and broken easily.
Sorry for my poor English if what i said is not clearly enough.

Thank you so much for your cotinued help.I`m afraid my wife has just had an operation and is at home recovering so I`ve had to put the printer on the back burner .
I did strip the printer down again and found that I`d not assembled the paper pick up roller assembly correctly as I`d left the short arm tabs in front of the chassis tab instead of behind.(page 96 of the manual). That corrected it did a correct cycle but then it was followed by a further sheet.I found the solenoid was stuck closed so I used a piece of card and that cured that,
Yes. I think the paper sensor PS 202 is worn as you suggested because unless i push the paper well in the switch is not activated and feeling it ,it has a lot of lateral movement , so I need to remove that and try and repair it.
Have you got a good close up photo of the "flag " for this switch so that I can build it up to the correct profile with apoxy resin?
Having got the thing moving paper through it ,it now seems it does not want to print an image, as at the end of the test cyle the page is just grey with no info on it,yet it was OK before I started interfering with it.
There is just one other point worth mentioning which may have something to do with it not producing an image is that when I was disassembling it there was no "Ground Spring" fitted to the left end of the feed roller.( I may have knocked it off and lost it without noticing) It appears to be just a single spring wire which "earths" the metal part of the roller, I think it may be just for anti static purposes?
It shows it on page 94 of the manual.
Again , have you a close up photo of the spring/pin so that I can make one.
I don`t want this thing to beat ne now, it become a real challenge!
Once again many thanks for continued interest.
Your English is understanbable , I wish I could speak your language as well as you speak mine.I know abit of Spanish!

I don't think you got the right direction to go.
You said " unless i push the paper well in the switch is not activated and feeling it ,it has a lot of lateral movement " so if you need to push the paper to into the path way then you may have a worn pick-up roller needed to be replaced. Or you can use something to wrap onto the surface of the roller to make it grab paper more easily. I've used sand-paper and the overgrip of tennis racket which will last its life for a while longer but replace the new roller is the best.
What you said "Ground Spring" has nothing to do with your situation and it won't cause any problem with or without it so don't bother it.
No image on the paper when printing which meats you may have a missing on the scanner.
There's a switch on the scanner when all the outer covers put together it won't be any problem but when you in the processing of testing with without covers cover then it may be a problem.
As to the the paper sensor PS 202 what i think is don't bother it by now because its worn up is really rare seen.
But what i'v said that the feed-roller needed to be taken care of more often.
If you saw the paper has been grabbed into the machine but stop at 10 cm or so and the paper often stops at top side of a long metal which seats under the toner cartridge then that's it.
Or you saw the paper has a difficulty to move forward smoothly and ended stopped before entering the furse unit or under furse unit, it's it too.

Hi , once again many thanks for your valued advice. As I said previously I`m a bit stuck at the moment caring for my wifew.
The paper "out" switch is definitely not making unless i push the paper onto the flag . The error light is on and I can extinguish it by flicking the flag on the underside through the photo sensor. The flag is quite loose and it appears not to have enough protuding through the plastic case for the paper to make contact with it.
When I get a chance I`ll strip it down and take a look at it.
I`ll also try and find that switch on the scanner unit, tht`s probably what`s causing the lack of image as I have been testing it with the cases off.
Is the switch obvious to locate\/
i`ll try and source a new feed roller
