Photosmart 7520e
Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion

A few weeks ago I had a wrestling match with my printer, a Photosmart 7520e, and I lost.  I left a piece of thin cardboard in the main tray and it started to feed through.  I grabbed the cardboard and tried to yank it out without success.
Now my 7520e will not print.  Although I have good, clean letter size paper in the main tray, the display repeatedly gives me the error message: “Out of Paper.  Load paper into the main tray and touch OK.  HP recommends ColorLok® papers for best printing results.”

I have done the restart procedures repeatedly.  I cleaned the rollers as directed and and removed as much dust and dirt from the device as I could.  Still no luck.  Still the same error screen.  Any advice would help.  If at least for ecological reasons, I would rather not buy a new printer.

A warm welcome to HP Forums! This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips to your technical queries.

Most of the Out Of Paper error can be resolved by power resetting the printer, cleaning the paper feed rollers and updating the printer firmware. Let's try these steps:

1) Make sure this printer is plugged into a direct wall, not a surge protector

2) Remove all of your ink cartridges from the printer and close the door

3) Remove the power cord from the back of the printer (Do no press the power button)

4) Clean the paper feed rollers, refer to solution 4 from this document.

5) Plug the power cord back into the printer

6) Wait for the printer to turn on completely, then install the ink cartridges.

7) Use the steps available here to update the printer firmware.

Let me know how it goes!

I followed all the steps about rebooting and cleaning, all with no result.  I luckily found a video that explained the problem.

Otherwise, I realized I could push the paper in until the back rollers grab it.
It’s too bad that there’s neither an easy nor reliable way to affect this repair on the 7520, but that what’s forced obsolescence is all about.
