LaserJet MFP283.  Windows O/S.  HP Smart.  The printer worked fine for a long time but a while ago, it started to print shifted down on the page by approximately 1/2 inch.  I used to be able to print labels perfectly, but no longer. Not specific to Word. Both tray and manual feed come out the same.  My computer says the printer is working fine and has the best driver.  I've spent hours trying to find a solution online and keep going around in circles.  I hope there's some help out there for dummies. Please and thank you.

Hi @genejan,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I am sorry to hear that your HP LaserJet MFP 283 is printing shifted down on the page, it can be frustrating, especially when you need precise results for tasks such as printing labels. Here are steps to help resolve this issue:

Check Page Size and Layout Settings:

  • Ensure the page size and layout settings in your print setup match the paper you are using. Sometimes default settings can switch, causing misalignment.

Run Printer Alignment Test:

  • Access the printer settings via HP Smart, and run any available alignment tests. This will ensure the printer hardware aligns correctly with print jobs.

Check Paper Type and Quality Settings:

  • Make sure that the printer settings in Windows match the paper type you are using. For labels, select the appropriate paper type to avoid any sliding or misalignment.

Advanced Print Settings:

  • From the print dialog box in Windows, go to 'Printer Properties' and 'Advanced' settings to ensure that settings such as scaling are turned off. Any scaling options or fit-to-page settings might cause a shift.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Check for any firmware updates for your printer model. Updated firmware may resolve glitches related to print alignment.

Driver Reinstallation:

  • Although your computer recognizes the best driver, it can be beneficial to reinstall it from HP’s official website to ensure it is not corrupted.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Thank you, Pallipurath, for taking time to answer. I DO seem to have the printer working properly again, at least with Word, which was the main concern. I'm not sure what made the difference as I looked at many things.  I had already checked the obvious things like paper size (letter) but checked everywhere again at your suggestion.   I might have re-set some defaults inadvertently in this process, but the only thing I knowingly changed now was to unselect the "Scale content for A4 or 8.5 x 11 paper sizes", the instruction for which I found down another rabbit hole.  Even though the word "alignment" seemed promising for troubleshooting, once I read that description I don't think it applied, as the print quality was fine, just not its position on the page. Anyway, Windows and HP seem to be on good speaking terms again here, for reasons that I'm not 100% sure about. I will keep your instructions in case things go awry again.  Moving on, finally!
