The HP app is saying my printer setup is incomplete despite being 5 years old and I was able to print last weekend

Hi @KG1611,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP printer is showing “Setup Incomplete” in the HP app even though the printer is several years old and was printing normally recently. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Confirm the printer still works independently
Try printing a test page directly from the printer control panel or from your device.
If printing works, the issue is with the app status, not the printer hardware.

Restart the printer and your device
Turn off the printer, unplug it for 30 seconds, then power it back on.
Restart the computer or mobile device to refresh the app connection.

Sign out and sign back into the HP app
Open the HP Smart app and sign out of your HP account.
Close the app completely, reopen it, and sign back in to resync the printer status.

Remove and re-add the printer in the HP app
In the HP app, remove the existing printer from the app view.
Add the printer again so the app can complete its internal setup steps.

Check printer connection status
Make sure the printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network as your device.
Network changes can cause the app to think setup was never completed.

Update the HP app and printer firmware
Install any available updates for the HP app from the app store.
If prompted, allow the printer firmware to update as well.

Understand the “Setup Incomplete” message
This message usually means the HP app has lost its link to the printer or account, not that the printer needs to be reinstalled.
It does not affect basic printing unless additional features like scanning or cloud services are used.

I hope this helps.
