HP laser Jet 1022
Mac OS X 10.11 El Capitan

This problem was discussed in this thread but apparently not resolved.

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Inkjet-Printing/HP-Laserjet-1022-always-extra-paper-after-finish-print...

After the last page of a print job an extra blank page feeds and stops half way out when the printer feed stops.

Easy Start and Uninstaller appear not to be working on Mac. I couldn't get either to work.

I was unable to D/L software from the HP site. Apparently it's not available from Apple since 2016.

Can anyone point me to a thread or an article with a step-by-step  solution that has actually worked, please? I've tried manually to uninstall and reinstall software but now, not only does the paper feed still malfunction but the font size is much larger than before. I may be able to adjust that somehow but don't want to fiddle with anything until the misfeed problem is solved as every print job means the cartridge has to be removed and the jammed paper removed.

I'd sincerely appreciate some assistance, Thanks.

Hi @cleokitty,

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

As I understand, your printer is feeding extra sheet which jams the printer.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

When was the last time it worked fine?

Were there any hardware/software changes made?

Let's perform a Firmware update.

If the issue persists, please perform a hard reset. I will send a private message with reset steps.

Please check your Private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Forums profile

Next, to your profile Name, you should see a little blue envelope, please click on it or simply click on this link: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/notes/privatenotespage

Thank you for the response, but it hasn't solved the problem.

The HP site says that since 2016 Apple doesn't provide driver updates for HP that they have to be D/L from the  h.p site.

I did that but the problem of the extra sheet persists.

The Apple printer D/L site tells me that the version that was already installed with Apple updates ,1.6.1, is the current version for El Capitan (10.11).

The printer has not been used for a while  so there have been software updates from Apple but it appears the version is still the right one.

It is no longer under warranty.

Hi @cleokitty,

I have brought your issue to the attention of an appropriate team within HP.

They will likely request information from you in order to look up your case details or product serial number.

Please look for a private message from an identified HP contact.

Additionally, keep in mind not to publicly post personal information (serial numbers and case details).

Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forum.

There is a chance the problem lies with the pick up assembly, specifically the solenoid.

In the 4000/5000 series models, there was a strip of foam attached to the strike plate to dampen noise. Over time, the foam would disintegrate leaving only adhesive. The strike plate would stick, causing the printer to error out in the state you describe.

There are a couple of fixes, but preparation is necessary. First, be sure to have a SERVICE (not User) manual handy (Google your model number online, it's out there) as there is a bit of disassembly required.

Once you have access to the pick up assembly, either replace it (p/n RM1-2043-000CN, about $50.00 or less from a number of places), or clean the solenoid.

If only cleaning the solenoid strike plate, thoroughly remove ALL adhesive and foam. If you like, apply a thin piece of electrical tape to the strike plate to dampen the noise (though you may never notice if you don't).

The part number I provided shows as valid in HP PartSurfer but shows as discontinued in the HP Part Store. There is no separate part number for the solenoid listed in the service manual. Google RM1-2043-000CN and you will find a dozen places that supply it. It is very likely that any assembly you buy online will be "refurbished". Pick someone you trust.

Hope that helps!

Thank you EOJTech. I really think it’s a software issue because the paper only jams after the last, unnecessary sheet feeds.

It doesn’t randomly, or even consistently, pick up two sheets at once. i.e. a three page print job will print the three pages of the document properly then feed a fourth, which only goes halfway through. It hasn't, to date, picked up two pages at once.

A one page document will pick up and feed a second page which feeds halfway through.

Also, the last sheet feeds to precisely the same place every time. It stops when the rollers stop feeding. For some reason an extra sheet is picked up and the rollers stop when it’s half-way through. That page doesn’t tear. It just stops feeding.

I'll keep your possible solution in mind. Meanwhile it's been suggested I only put the number of pages in the tray that are required for the particular print job. I'm going to do that as a stopgap until the problem can be solved.

I'm going to check the driver settings to make sure nothing has been reset to print a 'cover sheet'.

Thanks again for the detailed instructions. What you have alerted me to is the possibility that this might solve a problem I have with a Kyocera copier, which I have replaced but not discarded yet. There is a sticky disintegrating patch of foam with smears of toner on it that was smearing on the copied pages.  I'll try cleaning the foan away and see if that solves the copier problem.  I won't care about the noise if it fixes it. Thank you.

Did you ever figure this out? I'm having the exact same issue.

In my brief experience with this, this seems to be a physical jam cycle (which makes it seem like your paper or sticky rollers is the culprit) but is really a hardware/software issue. For example, does it feed a few papers then jam on the 3rd continually? If it can feed the 1st 2 why does it jam on the 3rd if it's a roller problem doesn't make sense to me.

Anyway, try this:

1. Clear out your print queue completely. Do this via Services: Stop the print spooler. Go to your windows/system 32/spool/printers and delete the jobs. Restart the Spooler

2. Unplug your printer and wait 30-60 seconds. Remove ALL the paper from the tray. Plug it back in. Reload the paper back in the paper tray

3. Redo your print job

Worked for me. No guarantees given I'm not an HP tech. Just an oft frustrated HP user that miraculously has fought with and retained the same printer for years:)
