Product Name: hp Laserjet 1320n
Computer: HP Notebook HP 15-AY 148TU SLV NBK DNX
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home (64-bit) Version 1709 OS Build 16299.248
Versus
Computer: Toshiba Satellite L750
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home (64-bit) Version 1709 OS Build 16299.192
Until recently my HP LaserJet 1320n has been working fine. The other day when I wanted to print a pdf document from my new HP laptop to the printer, the first time I got the message “Error printing on hp LaserJet 1320 PCL 5. The printer couldn’t print XXX.pdf”. If I tried again I would get the message “Printer is in an error state ‘hp LaserJet 1320 PCL 5 is in an error state;”. Once I cleared the printer queue, it went back to the first message. I tried restarting my laptop and turning off and on the printer but it didn’t help. The printer is able to print a demo page from the control panel of the printer. My laptop connects to the printer with a USB port. I’ve looked through the forum replies. I tried changing the printer cable to a different USB port to no avail. I also tried printing from my old Toshiba Satellite L750 laptop which uses the same operating system. It was slow, but it printed successfully. So is there is a communication problem between my HP laptop and the printer? Do you have any suggestions as to what I should try next?

Hi Daud_Darseno,
Thank you for using HP product.
You may want to follow below steps, hope it will help to resolve your issue.
Step 1
Restore the Acrobat Preferences folder (Windows)
Restore the Acrobat Preferences folder to eliminate problems that damaged preferences cause. Most preference problems are caused by these file-based preferences, although most Acrobat preferences are stored within the registry.
Note: This solution removes custom settings for Collaboration, JavaScripts, Security, Stamps, Color Management, Auto Fill, Web Capture, and Updater.
- Quit Acrobat.
In Windows Explorer, go to the Preferences folder:
- (Windows 7/Vista) C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Acrobat\[version]
- (XP) C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\[version]
Move the Preferences folder to another location (for example, C:\Temp).
- Restart Acrobat.
[Note: The AppData / Application Data folder is hidden by default. See: https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/help/14201/windows-show-hidden-files on how display them]
If the problem recurs after you restore the Acrobat Preferences folder, then the problem isn’t related to the Preferences folder. To restore custom settings, drag the folder you moved in step 2 back to its original location. Then click Yes To All to replace the new Preferences folder.
Step 2
Open Acrobat > Preferences (Mac OS) or Edit > Preferences (Windows) and click the Security (Enchanced) category. Deselect Enable Enhanced Security, and then try to print the file.
Is the problem specific to this one file (PDF)? If so, there may be a problem with the way PDF was written (it could be damaged or corrupted). Check with other files (eg. PDF, Excel, Words) as well to replicate the issue.

Hello,
Please download and install HP Print Scan Doctor from www.hp.com/go/tools
Also when printing a PDF then try the below steps ...
Open the PDF doucument .
Click on File > Properties .
Document Properties will be displayed. Under " Document Properties " window, Click on "Security" tab.
Check if "Printing: Allowed". If it is not probably you will not be able to print.
Else try the below steps .....
Open the PDF document, Click File > Print . Make sure Your printer is selected, then Click on "Advance " at bottom. Make sure "Print as Image " is having check. Click OK . And click on OK again to Print.

Give Kudos to say "thanks" by clicking on the "thumps Up icon" .
Click "Accept as Solution" if it solved your problem, so others can find it.
Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP.

Thanks for your suggestions. I downloaded
downloaded HP Print and Scan Doctor 5.1. When I started running it I got a screen that said
hp Laser Jet 1320 PCL 5
Failed to communicate with your selected product. Follow the steps below to try to resolve the problem
Power cycle your router
Power cycle your device
Wait for these devices to reach a normal state
Click Retry to do a more advanced search
Click Connect if you have already tried the steps above
After I followed the instructions and clicked Connect I got another screen which suggested that the problem might be the USB cable, the hub, or the port. However rather than going through all the steps that screen suggested, I experimented as before by trying to print the Word document I wanted to print from my Toshiba Satellite L750. As before there was no problem.
So again my conclusiion is that the problem is with my laptop, not the printer.
With regard to your suggestion that there might be a problem with pdf settings, that seems unlikely. Because the failure to communicate always happens right at the begiining, and it's the same whether it's a Word document or a pdf document I want to print.
I'm open to more suggestions.
Thanks for your effort.
Regards,
David

I tried what you suggested. However when I downloaded the Dot4X64 file to install the driver and clicked on it to install, the install wizard only appeared for less than a second and then disappeared without apparently doing anything. I tried it several times and the same things happened. Not sure what to try next.
