Colour laserjet 2550Ln
Microsoft Windows XP

As printer cycles through cartridges in preparation for printing, it makes a clunking (or thudding) sound. This results in at least 1 colour being missing from the print - usually black. I have tried changing the black toner cartridge, but this makes no difference. Could this be a gear jumping?

Telling it to print in greyscale makes it print black OK.

Not sure if this is related, but the print and scan doctor says wrong printer port configured (Although it must have been like this for a long time before the missing print / clunking problem).

Connected by USB.

Just in case anyone else has this problem, I have now solved it with the assistance of someone in the know. The problem is the solenoid that holds the toner carosel in the correct position. This originally had a bit of foam inserted to reduce noise, and over time the foam disintegrates, leaving a sticky residue which delays the activation of the solenoid. This can be replaced with a small piece of velcro which will be much longer lasting! No need to buy a new printer!
