HP OfficeJet Pro 8035 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

My printer will only print in brown whether I choose color or B&W! Printer and computer are set to print in black (or color) in several places. It will only print brown even when just copying a black & white document. But, a test page from the printer will print black. I replaced the black cartridge today, but it didnt make a difference. This has been happening for a while, and it's now become more important because I need to print out official forms & letters for my sister's estate.

It also has not printed in blue for well over a year. I gave up trying to get that fixed. I do not want to spend the money buy a new printer if I can avoid it.

Hi @BanTalker,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how frustrating this is, especially when you need crisp black text for official documents and the HP Officejet Pro 8035 printer insists on printing in brown. Let’s break down what’s happening and fix it.

Step-by-Step Fix

1. Check Print Settings

  • In Windows 11:
    • Go to Settings → Bluetooth & Devices → Printers & Scanners → HP OfficeJet Pro 8035 → Printing Preferences.
    • Ensure Print in Grayscale → Black Ink Only is selected.

2. Clean and Align Printhead

  • On the printer’s control panel:
    • Setup → Printer Maintenance → Clean Printhead.
    • Run Level 1 cleaning, then Level 2 if needed.
    • After cleaning, run Align Printhead.

3. Print Diagnostic Page

  • Setup → Reports → Print Quality Report.
  • Check if cyan (blue) and black blocks are missing or faded.
    • If cyan is missing, the color channel is clogged, or the cartridge is defective.

4. Update Firmware

5. If Blue is Still Missing

  • Remove the cyan cartridge and check the vent tab (orange pull tab).
  • If the vent is blocked, gently clear it.
  • If still no blue after cleaning, the printhead may need replacement (HP can provide this part).
