I am having trouble getting my printer to print mixed pages. The printer trays are set up correctly and when I choose to print, "choose paper source by PDF size" is selected. I never had this issue before.

Hi @TgP866,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your printer is not printing mixed-size pages even though the trays are set correctly and “Choose paper source by PDF size” is selected. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Confirm each tray has the correct paper size set
– On the printer panel, open Tray Settings and verify the exact size (Letter, Legal, A4, etc.).
– The size in the tray must match the size defined in the print job.

Verify PDF page sizes in the file
– Open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat or Reader.
– Go to File > Properties > Description, and check if the page sizes are truly mixed (they must not all display the same size).

Disable “Fit” or “Scale to Fit” when printing
– In the print dialog, under Page Scaling or Page Size, select “Actual Size.”
– If scaling is enabled, all pages are treated as one size and will not trigger different trays.

Ensure the correct driver is installed
– Open your printer properties and confirm the printer is using the HP driver (not “AirPrint,” “Generic,” or “Class Driver”).
– Mixed-size tray selection only works correctly with the full HP driver.

Turn on “Auto Select” paper source
– In the Print dialog, choose Paper Source > Automatic or Auto Select.
– This allows the printer to pick trays based on page sizes.

Check print software preferences
– If using Acrobat, go to Preferences > Page Display and ensure “Use Logical Page Size” is enabled.
– This helps the printer recognize actual PDF dimensions.

Print a test from another PDF
– Try another mixed-size PDF to rule out a file-specific formatting issue.

I hope this helps.
