Printer will not print: "critical printing error"

HP Laserjet Pro M15a
macOS 10.15 Catalina

My printer was working earlier today, but now it is no longer printing anything.

1. The error light is not flashing.

2. The print jobs section acts as though the printer is connected. It says "printing--connected to printer." The job then responds as though it is complete, but the printer never physically tries to print anything.

3. Once, upon disconnecting and reconnecting the printer, the following message popped up:

"Critical printer error occurs. Printer is unable to print."

Does anyone know what is going on here?

Printer will not print: "critical printing error"

@Jennyfish14, Welcome to HP Support Community!

I understand you have issues with printing from your Mac Computer, follow the steps below-

  • Turn off the printer and your computer, and then disconnect the USB cable from the computer.
  • Connect the cable to a different USB port on the computer. The port should be USB 2.0 or greater. If you use a USB hub or docking station, connect the cable directly to the computer.

  • Make sure the cable is fully secured to both ports.

  • Turn on the computer, and then wait for the computer to complete the startup.

  • Turn on the printer.

Update the printer firmware

Download available firmware updates from the HP website

With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware.

Try printing.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.
