Most times it can not be done since when you plug in the usb cable the printer is not seen so there is no way to send the file into the printer using its usb port. That said there are usb to parallel adapters which may help you. As long the the adapter is plugged into the parallel port of the printer and the computer recognizes the adapter you should be able to redirect the firmware file to the printer. You have to use the net use command which redirects parallel stream to the usb port. If the adapter is seen by the computer you need to manually load the printer using the usb port the adapter is connected to. You then need to share the printer loaded to that port giving it a shared name. Now write down the shared name you gave the printer and also go to your computer properties and write down the name of the computer as those 2 items are needed to redirect. Now you download the firmware file from hp and rename name it 5550.rfu and place or copy the file to the root directory of your c drive. Now you go to a dos window by type command in the run line. You then type C:\ and hit the enter key. Now type net use lpt1: \\computername\sharename and hit the enter key. You have to substitute your actual names for the computer name and the sharename. If you get the command loaded successfully, then you type copy /b 5550.rfu lpt1 and hit the enter key. If it is working you will see a message on the printer control panel that is is receiving and upgrading the firmware. If you can not get it to work, then you need to order a replacement firmware CF card which are available to replace the CF card
