My HP Printer M225dw has a wireless connection to my iMac (OS High Sierra 10.13.5). At some point. in the past (perhaps when the OS was updated) I started getting a Printer Not Reponding message. I could still scan items. I found that a dummy scan cleared the problem and I could print a file. Sometimes I could only print one file before I had to do a dummy scan again.
Now I can still scan items but am unable to print at all.
I've followed the MrRobot instructions at:

It is great to have you back and your patience is greatly appreciated.
It looks like the printer is not connected to your network. I recommend you print a network configuration page and check the IP address of the printer.
Here is how it is done.
LCD control panels: On the product control panel, press the Setup button. Open the Network Setup menu and then select Show IP Address to display the IP address or host name.
If the printer is getting the correct IP address then follow the steps in the below artilce.
If the printer is not getting the correct IP address then follow the below steps.
Before setting up the printer on your wireless network, get the network name and password, and then make sure that the router, printer, and computer are turned on.
-
Gather the following items:
-
Network name: The network name is the SSID (Service Set Identifier).
-
Network password: The password might also be called the WEP key or WPA security passphrase.
-
A computer connected to your wireless network
-
Internet access: HP recommends broadband Internet access such as cable or DSL for software downloads, using Web Services, and getting printer updates.
-
-
Make sure the router and computer are turned on, and that the computer is connected to the same wireless network to which you want to connect the printer. Turn on the printer and place it close to the computer and within range of the router during the setup procedure.
-
Disconnect any USB or Ethernet cables from the printer.
Step 2: Connect to the wireless network
Follow these steps to use the Wireless Setup Wizard to connect the printer to the wireless network.
NOTE:
To use the Wireless Setup Wizard, you must have a wireless network set up and running.
-
On the printer control panel, touch the Wireless icon (
), and then touch Wireless Menu.
-
Touch Wireless Setup Wizard. The printer searches for available wireless networks.
-
Touch the name of your network, and then follow the instructions on the control panel to connect the printer to your wireless network.
Step 3: Download and install the software
Follow these steps to download and install the full feature software from the HP website.
-
Go to HP Drivers & Downloads. If prompted, type your printer model number, click Go, and then click Drivers.
-
Make sure that your operating system is selected, and then click Next.
-
Scroll down the page, and then click Driver.
-
Click Download, and then follow the on-screen instructions to save the software to your computer.
-
Open the folder where the software file saved (usually Downloads), double-click the file, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Welcome to the HP Forums!
Thank you for posting your query on this forum, it's a great place to find answers.
I reviewed your post and I understand that the printer is not responding when you print.
Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.
In order that I may provide you with an accurate solution, I will need a few more details.
- When was the last time the printer was working fine?
- Have you made any software or hardware changes on the computer?
While you respond to that, I recommend you remove the printer form your computer and then add the printer as an AirPrint printer and check.
Here is how it is done.
-
Search the Mac for Print, and then click Print & Fax, Print & Scan, or Printers & Scanners in the list of results.
-
Find the printer names that match your printer from the list of devices.
-
Figure : Printers and Scanner window with multiple names of a printer in the list
-
If you see multiple printer queues for the same printer, remove all extra printers by selecting them one at a time, and then clicking the minus button
at the bottom of the list. Leave one 'idle' printer in the list that matches your printer if available and use this printer as the Default printer.
-
Try printing again.
-
If the printer prints, you can stop troubleshooting.
-
If the printer remains offline or displays an error, continue to the next step.
-
Step 4: Delete the existing print queue and add the printer
Remove the printer queue from the list of printers, and then add it again. Doing so creates a new printing session.
-
Make sure your Mac is connected to the Internet.
-
In the Printers list, click your HP printer, and then click the Minus button
to delete it.
-
Click the Add button
.
-
Find and select the name of your printer from the Printer list, and then click Add to add your printer. Do not select an HP Fax driver.
NOTE:
If your printer does not display in the list, make sure the printer is connected, turned on, has power, and is ready to print.

-
Click Print Using or Use.
-
Select the name of your printer (if available) or AirPrint.
Figure : Menu showing AirPrint selected
Your new printer queue displays in the Printers list in an Idle status
.

-
Try printing again.
If you continue to face the issue, I recommend you update the printer firmware and test.
Follow the steps in the below article to update the printer firmware.

I stepped through all the hoops listed in your link:
Nothing worked until I reached the step titled:
Add a new printer using JetDirect protocol (HP LaserJet and network connection only)
This showed me how to enter the printer address manually.
Now I am up and running again. Thanks for all the help.
