HELLLPPPP!

When printing single-sided, the paper jams at the output of the duplex unit. I can only print by gently pulling the paper out of the unit when it comes out.

I've cleaned the feed rollers located underneath the printer, and the problem isn't there. The problem is with the duplex unit itself (which makes noise as soon as it starts up, as if the rollers are slipping).

Double-sided printing is impossible because the paper jams and can't be reprinted.

I've tried cleaning the rollers, but without success because they're difficult to access.

Is this unit a replaceable part? Do you have a tutorial for cleaning these rollers if you think that's the cause of the problem? I've looked for videos, but haven't found anything on this, and it seems the unit's rollers aren't easily accessible anyway… What can I do? Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi @eda92500,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I can hear how urgent this feels, especially when the paper keeps jamming and you’re forced to pull it out just to get a single page printed. That constant noise from the duplex unit makes it even more worrying. You’re not alone in this, this type of jam can usually be narrowed down with a few focused checks.

Step 1: Check Duplex Unit Seating and Internal Path

  • Turn the printer off and unplug the power cord.
  • Remove the duplex unit from the rear of the printer.
  • Inspect the paper path inside the duplexer using a flashlight.
  • Check for small torn paper pieces or labels stuck inside.
  • Reinstall the duplex unit firmly until it locks into place.

Note: If the duplexer is not fully seated, paper can stall at the exit area.

Step 2: Inspect Duplex Rollers for Wear or Slippage

  • With the duplex unit removed, locate the rubber rollers inside it.
  • Gently rotate the rollers with your finger.
  • Check if they feel smooth, shiny, cracked, or hardened.
  • Clean them using a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water.
  • Allow them to dry completely before reinstalling.

If rollers feel slick or make a slipping noise during startup, they may be worn.

Step 3: Verify Paper Type and Condition

  • Use fresh, flat paper only.
  • Avoid curled, damp, or lightweight paper.
  • Load 10–15 sheets only.
  • Adjust paper guides so they touch the stack without bending it.
  • Set paper type to Plain Paper in Printer Preferences before printing.
  • Lightweight or curled paper can stall inside the duplex path.

Step 4: Test Without Duplexing

  • In print settings, disable two-sided printing.
  • Print a 5-page document single-sided.
  • Observe whether the jam occurs before the page fully exits.
  • Listen for slipping or grinding noises during feeding.

Note whether the paper stops at the same position each time.

If it consistently jams at the duplex exit even for single-sided jobs, the duplex rollers or internal clutch mechanism may be worn.

I hope this helps.
