My printer has one dozen red dots from top to bottom of the right side, about 1/8 of an inch from the edge. It happens with different documents, using Explorer to print PDFs from various sources and Open Office to print with Writer. Printing a test page from the printer control panel does not result in the unwanted dots. The printer firmware is up to date.

Single color dots usually indicate a bad cartridge or something stuck to the drum of the cartridge, in this case the  magenta cartridge. You can remove the cartridge and examine the blue/green drum on the bottom. Do not touch the drum with bare hands as skin oil can lead to further problems. If there is something stuck to the drum you can try to clean it off by rubbing gently with a soft lint free cloth, however in most cases replacement will be needed.
