I am writing regarding my HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw.
The printer currently refuses to recognize compatible (third-party) toner cartridges, despite the fact that they are fully standard and functional.

I kindly request that HP enable the use of compatible cartridges on my device, or advise how this can be done.

Hi @navedyag

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how disappointing it feels when your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw refuses to recognize toner cartridges that appear to be standard.

You’ve already taken the effort to try compatible supplies, so let’s go through what can be done to restore smooth printing.

Why this happens

Your printer uses firmware and cartridge authentication to ensure supplies are recognized. When a cartridge isn’t detected, the printer will block printing even if the cartridge physically fits. This is why you’re seeing the refusal message.

Steps you can take

1. Power reset the printer

  • Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
  • Wait 60 seconds, then reconnect and power on.
  • Reinsert the cartridges firmly to ensure proper contact.

2. Check cartridge seating and contacts

  • Open the toner access door.
  • Remove each cartridge and inspect the metal contacts.
  • Wipe gently with a lint‑free cloth to clear dust or residue.
  • Reinstall the cartridges securely.

3. Update printer firmware

4. Use HP App to check supply status

  • Open the HP App on your PC or mobile device.
  • Select your printer, then go to Supplies.
  • Confirm whether the cartridges are detected or flagged.
  • This helps verify if the printer is communicating correctly.

5. Test with an original cartridge

  • If possible, insert one original HP cartridge.
  • If the printer recognizes it, the issue is with compatibility.
  • You can continue printing with original cartridges or test other third‑party ones to see if they are detected.

Your printer blocks cartridges it cannot authenticate, which is why compatible toner isn’t being recognized. By performing a power reset, reseating cartridges, cleaning contacts, updating firmware, and checking supply status in the HP App, you can confirm whether the printer will accept them. If not, the device will only operate with cartridges it can validate.
