When I try to scan to any device or email it says I need to be connected to a network.

Few things

1) Is the device networked, and have the proper network settings?

2) Under administration settings, make sure scan to email is enabled (administration>Scan to email>Enabled

3) Are the correct SMTP settings configured on your device?

 

All these settings need to be correct for scan to email to work properly.
