We need to have our laser jet MFP227dfw print single sided by default. We would need double-sided printing only on rare occasions. I tried to set up a preset, but it never gets saved. I've set it up and saved it a dozen times, and the next time you go to print, it doesn't appear and you have to do it all over again. And even if it was saved, it's no easier to remember to go to a preset every time than to just change to single sided printing. The printer needs to be single-sided by default. If that is not possible, then someone needs to do a software update for this printer, because it's ridiculous that you can't change it and have the change stick.

@newnaturals, Welcome to HP support Community!
This could be an issue with the print settings on the computer, Let's try the below steps to resolve it:
Make sure the HP printer drivers are installed, click here to download and install the same
Step 1: Click on the Windows logo on the computer screen and type “Run"
Step 2: Select the first option that says Run - Desktop app
Step 3: In the box type "control printers" > OK
Step 4: Devices and printers window will pop up > Right click on the printer > Printing preferences
Step 5: Look for "print on both sides" change to NO/NONE under printing shortcuts or Layout > APPLY > OK
Step 6: check the IP address of the printer if it is on a network and type the same on a browser to access the EWS page of the printer
/
Opens the Connection Information menu
Step 7 : On the EWS page, Select System tab > paper setup > Duplex > off
Let me know if this works
