The computer the printer was initially paired on died and was switched to a laptop. The laptop has recognized the printer but is stuck in the initializing stage. Things tried:
printer was restarted after turned off for 60 seconds
-took out the ink cartridge, unplugged both power cable and usb. Restarted with only the power cable plugged in and waited to put back in the cartridge and usb port.

Is there a particular step showing on the screen of the printer where it hangs? The firmware may be corrupt and the first thing that I would try would be a partial clean. Look for a PM from me with instructions.
