M252dw

I retired (junked) my failing Photosmart 5550 and am now learning my way around my new M252dw color laser printer. I think I've got the most pressing problem solved, the wireless connection repeatedly being lost, thanks to information found in this forum.

So far, however, I've been unable to print and envelope. I don't know if this is HP's problem or that of Microsoft Word 2016. After many attempts at usinbg Word's ridiculously complicated process, I've discovered how to get something printed. However, it's only part of the recipent's address, truncated at the left edge of the envelope. The return address is not printed at all. Presumably, it was printed "off the envelope".

Hey there! @Charlie_SD, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand you would like to know how to print envelopes on your printer.

Don't worry I'll try to help you out.

Did you any changes to your printer?

What application are you using to print envelopes?

What size of the envelope are you trying to print from your printer?

I have checked the printer specifications and please find the supported envelopes on your printer. If you are using a different type or size of the page, you may not be able to print the envelope.

Paper type

Paper size

B5 envelope

176 x 250 mm (6.9 x 9.8 in)

C5 envelope

162 x 229 mm ( 6.4 x 9.0 in)

DL envelope

110 x 220 mm (4.3 x 8.7 in)

Monarch envelope

98 x 191 mm (3.9 x 7.5 in)

U.S. 10 envelope

105 x 241 mm (4.1 x 9.5 in)

Refer the product specifications page for more information.

Try the steps recommended below to Print an envelope in Pages

1.In Pages, choose File > New (from the File menu at the top of your computer screen).

2.Click Stationery on the left side of the template chooser.

3.Scroll down to the Envelopes section, then double-click an envelope template.

4.Click Document, then click Document.

5.Choose an envelope size from the second pop-up menu in the Printer & Paper Size section.

6.On the envelope template, click placeholder text in the recipient address, then type the address.

You can add or delete lines as needed.

7.Double-click text in the return address, then type your address.

The return address is a text box. Drag the selection handles if you want to resize it.

8.Choose File > Print (from the File menu at the top of your computer screen), choose a printer from the pop-up Printer menu, then click Print.

To create personalized envelopes with your return address, you can save the envelope as a custom template. Your envelope template appears in the My Templates section of the template chooser if you save it there.

Many thanks for your help, MrRobot. Since my posting, I also discovered that I could print envelopes by using Pages, very much as you described. I have no idea what Microsoft Word is doing.

I did develop one interesting technique. I often want to print a 6 3/4 envelope. The printer dialog allows custom sizes. I set up the 6 3/4 envelope as a custom size, but was unable to print it on my M252dw. After many attempts, I noticed that the two addresses were being printed "off envelope". So I lied to the M252dw. I defined a #10 envelope in Pages with the addresses shifted far to the right, in the part of the envelope that would be occupied by a 6 3/4 envelope if it were on top of the #10. I tell the printer that I'm printing this fake #10 envelope, but put the 6 3/4 into the envelope slot. It works fine!

Whatever happened to the Apple idea of plug and play, that you just attach a peripheral to the proper connection and it works out of the box? Learning how to print duplex and envelopes took me significant parts of five days.

Had same problem with MS Word 16+ printing envelopes on a HP P1006 Laserjet printer (legacy species).  The printer would print from web browsers and other applications to regular paper.  Did some testing using Word's Mailings men item.

After several dozen attempts to print envelopes, including a reinstallation of the HP64 bit software update, the problem seemd to be with "Printing Options" sub menu.  The "Feed from" was correctly showing options for the envelope selected in Envelope Options.  But I hit the drop down arrow on the "Feed from" and found to my surprise there were TWO entries for the envelope tray, named "Tray 1" (default) AND a second listing for "Tray".   You have to go into this each different envelope, and make the change from "Tray 1" to Tray.   But it is AT LAST PRINTING ENVELOPES correctly, obviating the need for designing your own "page" type.

note:  I have encountered a similar problem with Win 10 in another application, where I had to change the default from "something"+a number, to just "Something" to get Win 10 to handle it.  Not sure why this is yet, but it seems to be that Win10 is saying "I don't see a Tray 1"  because that is not in its 'defaults' handling.  But using "Something"  without a number does seem to make Win10 correctly find the device or destination in its built-in repertoire of destinations it "knows" about.
