Printing 5 copies, stopped, error code suggested paper jam.  Removed one sheet from back of lower tray. Error number remained. took printer apart according to manual and found no more paper jams. Was able to print one more project with no problem. Just attempted to scan, received same error message. Followed all suggestions. Rebooted printer, modem, computer. uninstalled and reinstalled HP Printer File.  Hoping for suggestions.

Hi @Terry15401,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

That error, WFBackgroundShortcutRunner‑ErrorDomain error 0, often indicates a background task related to scanning, shortcuts, or printing has failed at a low level (not necessarily a hardware fault). You've taken great first steps by clearing paper jams, rebooting devices, and reinstalling software. Let's take it further:

Step 1: Use the HP app’s “Diagnose & Fix” Tool

  1. Open the HP app on your computer.
  2. Select your printer, then click Diagnose & Fix under the printer menu.
  3. Follow any steps it recommends to repair services or restart components.
This tool repairs internal services that might be failing in the background.

Step 2: Reset the Printing System (macOS only)

  1. Go to System SettingsPrinters & Scanners.
  2. Control-click (or right-click) in the list of printers.
  3. Choose Reset printing system…
  4. Restart the computer.
  5. Reinstall your HP printer via the HP app.
This clears leftover configurations that could be causing the error.

Step 3: Reinstall the HP app/ Easy Scan

  1. Completely uninstall the HP app or scan utility you’re using.
  2. Restart your computer.
  3. Reinstall the app from HP App – For HP Printers, Laptops, and Tech Accessories | HP® Official Site.
This ensures any corrupted background services are reset.

Step 4: Try Alternative Scanning Apps

Switch to macOS’s built-in Image Capture app instead of the HP scan tool:

  • Connect your printer via Wi-Fi or USB.
  • Open Image Capture (found in Applications > Utilities).
  • Select your printer, then scan.
This bypasses HP software entirely and avoids the error.

Step 5: Restart All Devices in Order

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it for 60 seconds, then plug it back in.
  • Restart your computer.
  • If using a network printer, also reboot your router.
Then open HP Smart and try scanning again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
