P1606dn
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I had comcast internet, a motorola modem and linksys router. Everything worked.

Switched to CenturyLink with their modem/router. everything worked EXCEPT I can't print via ethernet connection from any of the three computers to the HP P1606. Deleting the printer results in inability to reinstall it. Even in that state, I can still print to it from my iPhone. Everything else on the network talks to each other. and I can print to another HP printer via a wifi connection  from the same modem/router. I can also print to the P1606 from my iPhone (WIFI to the modem router then ethernet to theP1606).

Spent 10 hours over two days with a centurylink tech and learned nothing. Then I called century link to see if I could get a replacement modem. BUT first they want to know the port number of the Printer P1606 to the modem/router.

I think they know something but won't share and I can't find a source to get this port number from.

is where I think your problem lies.  Because of this, I don't think a replacement router is going to help.  Let me explain.

First, I'm willing to bet that the router you borrowed from your neighbor issued IP addresses in the same range as your old Comcast router, and the new router does not.  For example:

Original Comcast router gives out addresses in the  192.168.0.X range.

CenturyLink router gives out addresses in the  192.168.1.X range.

Neighbor's router gives out addresses in the  192.168.0.X range.

I think one of your devices is getting a dynamic address from the router, and the other is static.  The computer won't easily be able to see/install the printer unless both of their IP addresses are in the same range (ie, both in 192.168.0.X, or both in 192.168.1.X, but not one in each).

If you have access to a "tech guy", show him this thread, and tell him to make sure all the devices have an IP in the same range.  He'll have you printing with your CenturyLink router in less than 10 minutes.

Good luck!

Matt

@Endofile

Sounds like from your computer end because printer is connected perfectly to the new router.

It may fix the problem for you. If not, post back full error message(s).

Regards.

Thank you for your offer to help. A little additional background.

Prior to installing the new Modem/Router everything plugged into the ethernet network worked. Three computers, the P1606dn printer, two NAS drives, and a wifi network extender. All three computers could print to the P1606,

Once the Modem/Router was installed, everything worked, EXCEPT none of the three computers could print to the P1606 via the ethernet network. Using a USB connection from any of the three computers to the P1606 aso worked. Trying to print from an iPhone on the WIFI netwrk to the printer with a ethernet cable from the printer tothe router, worked.

I rdefuse to accept that all three comuters failed the same way on the same day.

Running HP Print and Scan DDoctor 5.1, The printer shows up. Twice actually from when I installed it with a USB connection and from when I installed it with a ethernet connection. (I wish I could paste a screen shot here.

Upon clicking Next, I get 'Failed to communicate with your selected product. Follow the steps below to try to resolve the problem.. I have followed all of the steps repeatedly and had no success.

Pursueing the error path, I end up with a message telling me how to connect the product to the network. I have done this several times. I have disconnected and reconnected the original cable. I have swapped a cable from a different device. I have used to new Cat5 cables. I have switched ports ofrom the modem.

I truly do not know what this Port number the modem router prople have asked for is. They claim that HP does. Any help you can provide will be most welcome.

Hi.

Here's what I think might be going on:

I think it's possible that when you switched ISPs, your Local Area Network IP addresses changed when you swapped routers.

I would expect the iPhone (which uses Airprint) to work automatically in this case.  The three computers, however have P1606 drivers installed that are pointing to an IP address for the printer that might not exist anymore.  This is where I want to concentrate.

Normally, I'd tell you to simply delete the existing drivers from the computers and re-install them, but I think you mentioned that you were having issues doing that.  I'd love to know 2 pieces of information at this point: The current IP address of the printer, and the current IP address of one of the PCs.  Can you get those?  I

In case you're not sure how to find those, here are the steps:

The IP for the printer is printed on the configuration page.  Here's a link to the instructions for printing it:

P1606dn config page

For your pc, open command prompt, and type 'ipconfig'.  Your IP address will display.

If you have any issues with this, feel free to ask a follow-up question, or send me a direct message.

Good luck!

Got tired of working this problem. I borrowed a router from a neighbor. Plugged computer in one port, and printer is another. Sent test page from computer to printer. It PRINTED. Opened small file and it printed. Turned computer WIFI on and was able to access internet through problem router and able to access NAS drives. Rececked printing to this printer and it still worked,

I am convinced it is the modem/router. I don't know if it is a fault in this one, or a design problem with the model. I have gotten the manufacturer of the C3000Z to promise to send me a replacement. I could be wrong and will welcome any further insight you offer.

Is there any way to change the IP on the HP P1606dn printer? Or to change the IP range the Router hands out.

HP Recommended

Yes.  If the IP address on the printer is currently manually configured, a cold reset will do it.  I think the link to the instructions for that is earlier in this thread.

For the router, you'll need the username/password to access it.  Your new ISP may have given it to you, it might be printed somewhere on the device, and you might need to look it up or call your ISP.  It's also POSSIBLE that your ISP won't give you access to the router settings.  Anyway, once you get in, you'll want to find the DHCP settings.  I've attached a screenshot of mine from my netgear router.  Yours won't look identical.

Good luck!

imagecomputer,

Thanks. You changed my focus and I managed to change the IP for the printer. The world is sweet now. Thank you again
