I've used a USB cable to connect a Laserjet M402dne to an Asus Chromebook C434T (using USB 3.1, type A to type B cable).
The ASUS reports (when you click on the clock) "Hewlett-Packard LaserJet M402dn (USB) is connected and ready" but an attempt to print results, after that printer is selected, in "setting up"(or somesuch) replaced after a bit by "Error setting up printer". Self-test reports print OK through the printer's own menu/display.
I have no clue as to what that uninformative error message might mean.

Hi,
Please make sure you have the HP Print for Chrome app installed and check if that may help:

Installed that app, but attempting to print failed in exactly the same way as before: After selecting "Print" of a browser page per the app's instructions and choosing the "destination" "Laserjet M402dne" the Chromebook says "Setting up..." which transforms to a red "Error setting up printer" message.
