I finally had some time to work with this printer.
I found an error message in the Event Log under PrintServices - Admin.
Event ID: 372
Task Category: Printing a document
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic Spooler Event,Document Print Job
User: SYSTEM
Computer: BD-ELENA.msmyid.uga.edu
Description:
The document 2SY2/VPS/SYSTMS.IMSMSG.JOB02951.D000002E.?, owned by IMSMSG (128.192.253.2), failed to print on printer HP Color LaserJet Pro M452 PCL 6. Try to print the document again, or restart the print spooler.
Data type: RAW. Size of the spool file in bytes: 4801. Number of bytes printed: 4801. Total number of pages in the document: 0. Number of pages printed: 0. Client computer: \\BD-ELENA. Win32 error code returned by the print processor: 2147500037. Unspecified error
In the Spool\Printers folder I found 2 files: 0002.SHD & 0002.SPL.
Any suggestions? I am about reaady to give up.
thanks,
Jill

Data type RAW is (I'm fairly sure) what we require, since the formatting (as PCL XL) is being done on the remote IBM machine.
The two (equal) byte size values appear to indicate that all the bytes in what was received have been processed.
The zero page counts is probably because the target printer is paused (or unavailable) - at least I assume that it is, which is why we can still see those two files.
... not sure about the 2147500037 error - some sort of Microsoft 'catch-all'.
It would be interesting to see the content of the two files you mention - These may be the equivalent of the .cfa and .dfa files I was referring to.
Try to open each of those files, using NotePad.
Some text may be apparent, but there may also be lots of 'weird' characters - but it may all be meaningful.
If not too large, can you copy/paste the results of this - use the Insert code button
>> Any suggestions? I am about reaady to give up.
Initial suggestions as per above.
I'm willing to carry on, but I can only do this if you can still do these (and perhaps other) tests.
Note that I'm out tomorrow afternoon and evening (UK timezone).

It may also be worth looking at the (quite long) question https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/LaserJet-Printing/print-jobs-disappear-from-queue-and-nothing-is-ever-...
That user had similar errors reported with a LaserJet M477 which 'printed nothing', although this was for all jobs, and LPD was not involved.
It seems that the eventual resolution was to reinstall a particular driver, but to abandon the (apparently automatic) MS driver install.
The underlying problem remains a bit of a mystery though.

Yes I have reinstalled th driver and replaced the Windows default driver install, although I think they were the same thing. v4 appears to only be for Win10, the Win7 drivers are v3.
Yes the print stream neds to be RAW so everything looks correct, the printer just doesn't know what to do.
Still convinced it's a driver problem, but there don't seem to be any more dirvers. I can work on this through tomorrow, then the user comes back and I have to give her a printer that works.
thanks,
Jill

I'm not sure whether or not those two files are related to your IBM job or not.
The two files (as posted) are exactly the same (not as I'd expect).
... and they don't contain a raw PCL XL print job.
If viewed using Word (and specifying 'Windows default' rather than 'Unicode' for the character set encoding), they look like this:
Does any of the text in there seem to you to relate to the IBM print job?

>> ... Still convinced it's a driver problem, but there don't seem to be any more dirvers ...
The evidence appears to indicate that this is the case, but what I don't understand is that the driver should not be involved if the data is RAW and being formatted on the client system.
The printer instance should just use the port information to tell it where to diriect the data.
You could try setting up a new (additional) printer instance (using the Add Printer dialogue, I think) for the M452 (as I assume that you want the existing instance retained for local Windows prints), but use the M451 driver.
... or (temporarily) change the driver on the existing M452 instance to the M451 driver on the Advanced tab of the Printer Properties dialogue.

As a IBM mainframe person, I might be able to offer some insight.
The IBM mainframe cannot print to a network attached printer, or produce PCL. It has to have some application installed to do these things.
If I was the mainframe guy, I'd be asking things like has the IP address of the printer changed? Has the queue name on the printer changed?
If it's a HP printer, the mainframe software that allows network printing probably has a configuration for it using LPR. It may use an IP address or network name, and it may have a print queue name. (It could be a direct sockets link to port 9100)
The fact that the output "disappears" from the mainframe spool suggests that the mainframe application has dealt with it, (normal processing) but it does not mean it has sent it on to the printer.
I'd be speaking to the mainframe support person in charge of printing, and checking that the configuration on the mainframe application is correct, and matches that of the new printer. Also that there are no error messages in the mainframe applications log.
Am I correct in thinking the printer is USB attached to a PC? If so is it also on the network seperately?
