It looks like the m15w does not have wifi direct enabled out of the box. Is it possible to turn on/configure wifi direct without first being on a wifi network.
Hoping to connect macbook air to print via wifi direct without having a network (in a dorm with full building shared wifi/internet).
I followed the step to select the "DIRECT" printer from the wifi list of wireless devices but does not seem to connect.
Also, in this case how do we "install" the printer, when using quick start app, again it expectected it to connect to an existing wifi connection. Do you first install using USB?
There are no clear instructions other then if you have a wifi network in place. The only instructions i found on turning on the wifi-direct first needed to be connected over the network, then through browser connect to the printer to turn on wifi-direct.
So can you confirm if it is possible to get wifi direct without first having a network.
Thanks,
Pierre

I'm remotely helping my daughter as I only had a short amount of time to try before leaving.
I was trying to connect direct with a macbook air / mac os x (10.13). But when I changed the wifi connection to DIRECT-xxx it did not prompt for password and look like it was just trying.
Also, how do you install create the printer on the mac since when we start the "start here" software it needs to connect.
So I need detailed steps to start from scratch to get the printer installed on the macbook and connect to direct wifi without having access to a router.
We did not try to first install with USB.
Thanks,
Pierre

I read your response. You need to physically by the printer and the iPad to connect.
- Please refer to the user guide link: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05646631 for complete and detailed instructions on how to connect using the WPS method.
- Follow directions from pages 27-29 to connect using Wifi Direct without a router.
- Make sure that the iOS devices have all the latest iOS updates installed correctly.
WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) – WPS has two modes to connect devices together over a wireless connection. One is called "pushbutton" and the other is called "PIN". Pushbutton is by far the easiest method. I will describe how to connect using the WPS pushbutton method and the PIN method.
For instructions on starting WPS on your printer consult your printer's manual. However, there are some conditions that need to be met in order to use WPS pushbutton mode:
- Both your printer and wireless router must support WPS pushbutton mode. Consult your printer and wireless router manuals.
- The wireless router must have a physical WPS pushbutton available.
- Your network must use WPA or WPA2 security. Most WPS wireless routers will not connect using the WPS method if WEP or no security is used.
- Most WPS wireless routers will not connect using the WPS method if you are using the manufacturer’s default for the network name and no security.
To connect your wireless printer to your wireless router using WPS:
- Start the WPS pushbutton mode on your printer.
For instructions on starting WPS on your printer, consult your printer's manual. - Within 2 minutes, press the WPS button on your router.
To connect the printer using the PIN Method:
- On the printer control panel, touch (Wireless), and then touch Settings.
- Touch Wi-Fi Protected Setup, and then follow the on-screen instructions.
- When prompted, touch PIN. The WPS PIN appears on the display.
- Open the configuration utility or software for the wireless router or wireless access point, and then enter the WPS PIN. NOTE: For more information about using the configuration utility, see the documentation provided with the router or wireless access point. Wait for about two minutes. If the printer connects successfully, the wireless light stops blinking but remains lit.
- After the setup has completed, the network printer drivers can be installed by opening the printer's HP folder in Programs or All Programs, clicking Printer Setup and Software, and selecting Connect a new printer.

Hi,
I understand you want to know if you can enable WiFi Direct without first connecting to a wireless network. It appears you do need to first connect to a wireless network and then enable WiFi Direct by entering the IP Address for the printer into a web browser and then navigating to Networking page. It should have a section to enable WiFi Direct.
You may have an issue connecting the printer to a public WiFi network. Public WiFi is not supported. The connections tend to not be strong.
