I am not able to achieve double sided printing either in Linux or Windows 7. I know this printer supports double sided printing, but to automatically do it, do I need extra hardware? If so where can I get it? Or if it can already do it on it's own, I still cannot get double sided printing even in Windows 7 after checking the correct settings.

Indeed, only manual duplexing is available from the driver for your printer,
Which prompt to reload the printed page and follow the steps manually.

That depends on your exact printer model, while some models for that series support automatic duplexing some others does not support a such:

Ok, well I have scanned through the manual, and nothing helpful I get the impression that I need a duplxer I do not know. If I have to buy one, thats fine, but the manual is not helpful in this case. I even went into a Windows 7 VM (my printer is just connected via ethernet to my router), and I checked the settings for double sided printing and nothing. It still prints on pages single sided. What would be the best way to get more info on the printer (specific model#) , perhaps that will help you answer my question.

Hi,
What is the exact product name and its identifier as listed on the front of your printer?
https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_2039298-1862169-16
Also, the Product Number listed on the label at the back of your printer should help to identify its exact model:

Hi,
Please don't include such personal information as your printer's Serial Number.
The HP Laserjet Enterprise M553n - Model number B5L24A (assuming this is the model number you refer to?) does not support automatic duplexing, neither by standard or with any optional accessory.
The specific printer model cannot print on both sides automatically as the PDF above says:
