How to Know When Your HP Printer Cartridge Ink Is Low

On HP DesignJet printers (such as DesignJet 500/500ps/800/800ps):

  1. Check the front panel automatically

    • The front panel shows ink status and will indicate:
      • Cartridge Full
      • Low Ink Warning
      • Cartridge Empty
  2. Use the Ink menu to see levels

    • On the front panel:
      1. Press Ink.
      2. Select Information.
      3. Select Ink Cartridges.
      4. Select Ink Levels.
    • You will see the ink level status for each cartridge.
  3. View detailed cartridge information

    • On the front panel:
      1. Press InkEnter.
      2. Select InformationEnter.
      3. Select Ink CartridgesEnter.
      4. Choose Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, or BlackEnter.
    • Screen shows:
      • Status (inserted, low on ink, out of ink, missing, expired, faulty)
      • Expiration date
      • Serial number
      • Ink level in cc and % used
  4. Notes about low ink

    • A Low Ink Warning cartridge can still last a long time, especially for simple line drawings.
