hp LaserJet 1320
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

With the power switch on, am I leaving my HP LaserJet 1320 on all the time, in the ready state (when I'm not printing anything), and it's always using 6 watts?

After I installed "Dot4x64.msi" from the software support page, I can see it in the Device Manager, when the printer is "on" . . . I look at this value:

It can do D0 and D3 . . . but, based on this page, I'm thinking that it can only do fully on (6W all the time, maybe $5 per year in electricity) or fully off (where I turn it off with the power switch):

Understanding the Windows I/O System | Microsoft Press Store . . . D0 (fully on) . . . D3 (fully off) . . . The Ready state with the solid green light = 6W . . . https://www.microsoftpressstore.com/articles/article.aspx?p=2201309&seqNum=7

Isn't there a way to get it into a lower power state, less than 1W, after something like 30 minutes of no activity?  Then I wouldn't have to turn the power switch off.

I'm in Win 10.  Would the toolbox software on the CD still work in Win 10, and let me do this setting?  I don't see that a current version is available.

5,2 watts is bare minimum power consumption during printers sleep mode.

How and what can a computer do to make a printer to consume less power than the minimum during sleep?

It's manageable for a computer to make CPU, VGA, HDD or other internal components consume less power but for a printer, as an external device, I think that's not possible.

From the software section of the LaserJet 1320 page . . .

. . . I installed . . . Dot4x64.msi . . . and then I see:

1.) Device Manager / "Printers" / "hp LaserJet 1320 PCL 5"

. . . This pops up now when the printer turns on . . . I don't think I had it before, I think it just listed the 1320 under the "USB controllers" section

2.) hp LaserJet 1320 PCL 5 / Properties / Details / "Power data"

. . . I don't think it had this "Power Capability" before . . . PDCAP_WAKE_FROM_D0_SUPPORTED

. . . Please see two screenshots

In the specs, I see that the "Ready" state for the 1320 is 6W.

. . . are you saying that the bare minimum is 5W and 2W? . . . I think so . . .

Any idea how I could get the LaserJet 1320 to Sleep at 2W, after something like 1 hour?

I don't see anywhere to make this setting.

A few pages I've looked at say that their printer doesn't wake up.

Is Sleep mode for printers kind of buggy?  Why?

I'm thinking I'll just use the 1320 on a power strip, and flip it on/off every time, then that will keep my electric bill down, and save the switch from wearing out.

5,2 W is minimum power consumption when a printer is in a sleep mode.

Good luck making printer to consume less power than the minimum.

Thanks.  For some reason, I thought there was a Sleep Mode that used fewer watts - I think from seeing "Power States" D0 AND "D3"

In these specs:

1.) Why don't they specify how long before it goes from 5.4 to 5.2 watts?  Is it, like, 1 hour?

2.) Why wouldn't "Off" be 0W ?

Sleep: 5.2 W Per U.S. EPA ENERGY STAR® Test Guidelines
Idle/Ready/Standby: 5.4 W
Off: <1W

It would be good if they stated that there are no power saving settings for you to select in any software, anywhere, and that this is done automatically.

If left on 24/7, how much would it cost, just to be in Sleep Mode?

Electricity usage of a Printer . . . http://energyusecalculator.com/electricity_printer.htm

Hours Used Per Day:  24
Power Use (Watts):  5.2 . . . Sleep Mode Watts
Price (kWh): 0.14 . . . My electric rate in 2017

Cost Per Month:  $0.53
Cost Per Year:  $6.38

So, if I want to save $6.38 per year, power it on and off each time that I want to use it.

If Sleep only used 3W:

Cost Per Month:  $0.31
Cost Per Year:  $3.68

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

If you wanted to make it last longer:

1.) I supposed the power switch could wear out - so, use a power strip for that

2.) Would the life be longer if left on 24/7, or powered on and off for each use?

Heat is the enemy of electronics, so having it off when not in use would reduce the heat, and probably make it last longer . . . but when you power it on, there is a surge, so, maybe that's not good for it . . . don't know

I think I'll try powering it on and off each time, on a power strip, and if it lasts 10 to 15 years, consider that it did a great job.
