YOur nice simple instructions do not work. I have the same problem. I accidentally touched a button, now my $300 printer is in German, and wont print. I cant see how to change the language since I dont know German. I also dont have a little gear icon button. My printer is HP LaserJet Pro 400 m401n. When it works its great, but get it off setting and you can not do anything with it. All i can get it to do by pushing "OK" is print a report, which I dont want because its wasting my toner and paper. there are not online instructions anywhere for using the display, and for $300 I dont get a user manual. i have clicked ok and English NEVER appears inthe menu. why is that? Absolutely frustrated with this junk.

Sorry to hear you accidently put your language into German. The little gear icon is along the top of the control panel and the second button in (unless you have a 2 line display). The above instructions still work the same for German ...same row count down, etc. Enlish will be at the top of the menu. I have been able to change mine to both of the languages that you are having issues with. So English is listed in the menu.
The gear icon is a wrench and gear together.
Please let me know if you need screenshots.

Hi thank you for answering. I do not have a gear and wrench icon. I have a friend that is a computer wizard, and he agrees there is no wrench or gear icon. He has figured out a simple way to correct the problem and for any one else i am listing the steps. I run XP Pro, and have a HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401n: HOw to change language for HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401n:
1. click start, click All Programs.
2. search the list for HP. as you highlight HP, to the right opens another menu that shows your printer, HP LaserJetPro 400
3. highlight the printer name, and that opens another menu with HP Device Toolbox. click Hp Device Toolbox
4. a page opens.
5. Click System along the top. that opens a drop down menu. click System Setup. Search that page and in the middle is "language" and select English. click apply and your done.

Hi
To change the language, you need to perform reset on the printer.
Please find the steps to perform reset:
1. Turn the product off.
2. Perform the following steps:
- LCD control panel models: Simultaneously press and hold the right arrow button and the Cancel button. Keep these buttons depressed as you turn the product on.
3. When the Permanent Storage Init. message appears on the display, release the buttons.
4. When the product has finished the NVRAM initialization, it returns to the Ready state.
The product will now ask you to select language. Please select English as the default language
