This printer is SOOO buggy on my wife's MAC. (Mojave OS). It works fine for a few pages and then it randomly prints a page with nothing but this syntax error warning in plain text, that's it. Frequently the print queue errors out and says the Mac cannot communicate with the printer. Usually I have to unplug it and then plug back in and then it works for a few pages. The unit is just a few feet from the wifi router and no other printer in my house (four others) ever has any problem with the wifi.
We're very frustrated because this first unit we bought of this model was deemed defective hardware after I spent 1.5 hrs with HP tech support trying to figure out why the blue toner was not printing.
Does anyone from HP read these comments? PLEASE help!!! Thank you.

@55122print, Welcome to HP Support Community!
To be able to assist you better, I would like to know the following:
- Are the printer and PC connected to the same network?
- Is your router dual-band enabled i.e., both 2.4GHz and 5GHz?
- Is there any antivirus software installed on your computer?
- Could you perform a ping test using the Mac Network Utility and let me know the results?
Use the printer IP address to perform a ping test, the printer IP can be located by selecting the wireless icon on the printer display.
The wireless status menu on your Mac should also give us quite a lot of information that would help us identify the issue. You can press and hold option-click the WiFi icon and then use shift-command-5 to take the screenshot. Press the space bar when the icon turns into a camera. Share the ping test results and the screenshot with us.
Also, check with your Internet service provider if your router is able to forward 'Bonjour packets'.
Bonjour locates devices such as printers, other computers, and the services that those devices offer on a local network using multicast Domain Name System (mDNS) service records. The software comes built-in with Apple's macOS and iOS operating systems.
Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hello and thank you very much for the assistance. Your instructions are very clear. Here is what I can tell you:
* Yes printer and Mac are on the same wifi network
* My router is a 4th generation Apple Time Capsule which is dual band. As far as I can tell it is dual band enabled. In it's settings it is set to "automatic" for both the 2.4 and 5GHz bands.
* No antivirus software
* regarding Bonjour packet forwardin
Here is the ping test results:
And here is the wireless status screenshot:

Thanks for replying 🙂
Packet loss in the ping results shows that there is an intermittent communication issue between the devices.
Restart the devices-
- Turn the printer off, and then wait 10 seconds.
- Disconnect the printer power cord from the printer.
- Turn off the computer or the device you are trying to print from.
- Connect the printer power cord to the printer, and then turn on the printer.
- Disconnect the power cord from your wireless router, and then wait 10 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord to the router. Wait until Internet service is restored. Internet service is interrupted while the router is off.
- Turn on the computer.
Update the printer firmware
Download available firmware updates from the HP website
With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates.
For more information, go to Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware.
Try the ping test again and share the results.
Keep me posted for further assistance.

Try moving the printer closer to your router.
To isolate the issue further, help me with the details-
- What type of files are you trying to print?
- Does this issue occur on all types of files?
- If you have any internet security software, disable and try printing.
Keep me posted for further assistance.

TEJ,
The printer is already within 5 feet of the router. Really?? C'mon. I appreciate the effort but that isn't helpful.
I am printing exotic things like PDF files, MS Word documents and pages from websites. We continue to get this "Offending Command" error and also the error that the Mac just times out saying "cannot communicate with the printer", about 50% of the times we use the machine. The only thing that gets it back on track is to unplug it and then back in. There is no internet security software.
I have two other Macs in the house and two other non-HP printers (Canon & Epson). I have "ping tested" all of these machines through each permutation of machine/printer several times. Ping counts ranging from 10 to 100, I am not able to produce a single missed packet to/from either of the other printers from any of the Macs, which are placed in different parts of the house, both at much farther distances from router. 0.0% packet loss every time. I've run it a dozen times each. The only printer that has packet loss is the HP, and it does so from all three of the Macs, and the HP printer is closest to router by far.
The first unit of this printer that arrived (from AMZN) and would not print from the blue toner. Everything had bad colors. I spent 90 minutes on the phone with tech support there finally to have them admit it was a hardware problem. Sent back unit 1, this is unit 2--and so far you can see it's not a slam dunk. I am now spending further time, hours at this point, troubleshooting my second brand new out of the box printer of the same exact model. Sending back these 30 lb printers is not trivial. I'm about ready to toss unit 2 in a dumpster and call it done with HP....
What do you advise??
Thanks.

Hi -- thank you . Is there a way to contact HP Support and make reference to this exchange, so that I will not waste their time or mine starting from ground zero on this problem? It would be nice if whomever is helping me can see what we have already covered. At this point I've recycled the original box, else I really would just box it up and send it back to AMZN as defective, with all evidence to support that conclusion.
Is there anything else you can suggest I try, or do you believe the machine to be defective?
Thanks again.
