HP Laserjet 2200dn
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Own an old HP Laserjet 2200dn. Plastic has been drying out. Was printing from the drop-down manual sheet feeder (1 page at a time), and it started making grinding noises. Then the red light came on, and I couldn't reset the printer. Turned printer off to cool it down. Restarted printed and tried to print 1 sheet from manual tray (no auto tray). Grinding noise reappeared--same problem. QUESTIONS: 1) How do I stop the grinding noise? 2) Is this printer repairable? 3) OR, if I have to buy a new printer, which laserjet model with duplex printing, ethernet and USB capabilities would I buy? (Don't want a printer that does color or scans.)--Thanks, JLCK

Hard to say without hearing the noise, could be as simple as a bad cartridge or could be a failed cartridge drive or fuser drive. A good replacement for the 2200  would be a M404dn. Yes there are cheaper printers in HP's lineup and more expensive ones but if you have used the 2200 this long, likely the 404 is the best match for your print volumes, while providing similar features to your 2200.

One of the most common problems with that model printer was the laser scanner polygon motor bushing would tend to go bad and cause a squealing/grinding noise when trying to print and cause an error. You can usually take the laser unit apart and carefully pull off the polygon mirror shaft from the bushing and put a small amount of light oil in there to give it some lubrication and cushion and it would fine again, or replace the laser unit with one you can get off the internet. I had many customers with this problem years ago that I would fix this way or replace the laser unit itself.

This printer also has a Secondary error code system that you can activate to narrow down exactly what error it is getting. Once you get the primary error, you simply press GO and JOB CANCEL simultaneously to view the secondary continuable error information. This will light up a new set of lights on the display to reference using the Service Manual.

I'll send you a link to a service manual in a private message you can get online to use to check the error codes.
