You need to check the entire paper path for pages, including the bridge under the scanner that carries paper from the fuser to the finisher. Also make sure the finisher is secured to the printer.

A safe option to always try is a Power Reset to eliminate a possible logic or power issue:
First, make sure the printer is plugged straight into a wall outlet and not a power strip, surge protector or UPS.

With the printer plugged in and powered ON, disconnect the power cord from the printer. This will hopefully dissipate any electricity stored in the printer that could be hindering it.
Wait at least 30, preferably 60 seconds.

If there is a power switch, turn it to the OFF position.
Plug the power cable back into the printer.
Turn the printer ON with the power switch.

Hopefully this will reset it to normal.

Thanks everyone - I tried all the above and it didn't work. Eventually warnings came up that toners were empty (they had been running low). I replaced them and it started fine.

No idea though why it was stuck for so long on checking printer though

Well, if it's trying to add toner to the developers and they're low or empty, and it is not checking the toners levels first, it will just run and run trying to get the toner density right in the developers before moving on. It could be a firmware update might help.
