I've followed the suggestions listed here in 2014&15 but my printer still won't print. I am trying to print a plan black and white text. Nothing fancy. The printer also has a big red X on the lower right side of the display screen. Any suggestions to get me up and running are appreciated.

Sorry, not useful to post, I tried stuff listed here 4 years ago as I will not waste my time digging through old logs. Everyone here volunteers their valuable time and skills, so If you need assistance then please detail what you have tried.
the most common issue on MFP machines is old faxes clogging up the memory. You need to erase fax memory and that might help.

User's Manual:
X - Cancel button and light: clears settings, cancels the current job or exits the current screen.
NOTE: This button illuminates only when the current screen can use this feature.
So maybe there's something that needs cancelled.
Try this first:
Power Reset the printer
1. With the printer powered On, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer as well as any data cables (USB or network).
2. Wait 60 seconds.
3. Plug the power cord back into the printer and turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet. Avoid power strips, surge protectors and UPS devices.
Once the printer is powered up and ready, reconnect the data cable and try printing again.
