My printer frequently makes a noise like it's trying to do something (i.e., initializing or starting up,) This noise occurs when the printer is on but not in use (i.e., there are no print jobs in the queue)

Hi @Mancave47,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We completely understand how unsettling it can feel when your HP printer suddenly makes those soft whirs, clicks, and hums, even when you’re not printing anything. It can catch you off guard, especially in a quiet room, and we’re here to reassure you and help.

Let’s walk through why this happens and how we can make it feel more predictable and comfortable.

If the sound feels too frequent

If these noises occur every few minutes, instead of once every few hours, we can fine‑tune things:

Update Printer Firmware

Firmware helps regulate maintenance cycles.
You can update directly in the HP Smart App under Printer Settings → Advanced → Tools → Printer Updates.

Disable Optional Cloud Features

Features like Print Anywhere can cause more frequent wake-ups.

In the HP Smart app:

  • Go to Printer Settings
  • Turn off Print Anywhere
  • Optional: Turn off Web Services

Plug Printer Directly Into a Wall Outlet

Surge protectors can cause micro‑power fluctuations that make the printer wake repeatedly.

Restart Your Wi‑Fi Router

Sometimes, a “noisy” printer is simply being pinged too often by a busy network.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
