I have an HP LaserJet M209dwe printer. The solid orange light and the attention light are on, and the Wi-Fi light keeps blinking. I have reset the printer countless times and tried calling support more than a hundred times with no response. The printer is still in the same state, nonfunctional and constantly indicating an issue. This is extremely frustrating.

i have

changed the toner

checked and confirmed no paper jam, doors  are perfectly closed

restarted the printer

reset the wifi

and reconnected the wifi

what else i can do...

I understand your HP LaserJet M209dwe is showing a solid orange light with the Attention light on, while the Wi-Fi light keeps blinking, and the printer remains nonfunctional. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Confirm printer is not paused or in error state
Open Devices and Printers on the computer and check the printer status.
If it shows Paused or Offline, clear the queue and set the printer as default.

Perform a proper power reset
Turn the printer off using the power button.
Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet, wait at least 60 seconds, then reconnect directly to a wall outlet and power it on.

Check toner and internal seating
Remove the toner cartridge and reinstall it firmly until it clicks into place.
Close all doors slowly and firmly to ensure the sensors fully engage.

Verify paper size and tray settings
Remove all paper from the tray and reload plain white paper only.
Ensure the paper guides are snug against the stack and not over-tightened.

Restore network settings again (from the printer)
Press and hold the Wireless button and Cancel button together for 5 seconds.
Wait for the Wi-Fi light to blink blue, then reconnect the printer to Wi-Fi using HP Smart.

Reinstall the printer software
Uninstall HP Smart and any HP LaserJet drivers from the computer.
Restart the computer, then reinstall HP Smart and add the printer again from scratch.

Check printer firmware state
During startup, observe if the printer completes initialization or stays stuck with the orange and Attention lights.
If the lights appear immediately and never clear, this points to a hardware or firmware fault.

Identify hardware fault indication
On this model, a solid orange light with the Attention light on and continuous Wi-Fi blinking—after toner, paper, door, and reset checks—commonly indicates an internal hardware or logic board issue.
In this state, the printer will not become ready regardless of Wi-Fi or software resets.

I hope this helps.

Same problem here with HP LaserJet MFP M140we with Mac OS Sequoia. Just going in circles and no printer installation software anywhere to download. This printer is not that old and not much used. Absolutely annoying that I would have to replace it.

I understand your HP LaserJet M209dwe (and M140we) shows a solid orange light with the Attention light on and a blinking Wi-Fi light, and remains unusable despite resets and setup attempts. Let’s go through a few steps to clarify what this light pattern means and what can still be checked.

Understand what this light combination indicates
A solid orange light with the Attention light on means the printer is in a hardware or initialization error state.
A continuously blinking Wi-Fi light indicates the printer is stuck in setup mode and never reaches a ready state.

Confirm this is not a software or macOS issue
This light pattern occurs before the printer is fully ready.
If the lights never clear on power-up, the issue is inside the printer, not with macOS, drivers, or HP Smart.

Perform one final clean power reset
Turn the printer off using the Power button.
Unplug the power cord from the rear of the printer and the wall outlet for 2 full minutes, then reconnect directly to a wall outlet and power it on.

Reseat toner and check internal sensors again
Remove the toner cartridge and reinstall it firmly until it locks into place.
Open and close all doors slowly and firmly to ensure door sensors engage correctly.

Reset wireless setup once more
Press and hold the Wireless button and the Cancel (X) button together for 5 seconds.
Release when the Wi-Fi light begins blinking, then wait to see if the printer completes initialization.

Observe startup behavior carefully
If the orange and Attention lights appear immediately on startup and never clear, the printer is failing its internal self-check.
In this condition, software installation will always fail because the printer never reaches a ready state.

Clarify HP Smart and software availability
These models use HP Smart only and do not have traditional standalone driver installers.
If the printer never becomes ready, HP Smart will loop endlessly and cannot complete setup.

Identify the actual fault
When this light pattern persists after toner replacement, paper checks, door checks, and full resets, it indicates an internal hardware or logic board failure.
Wi-Fi, macOS Sequoia, and driver availability are not the root cause.

Why multiple users are seeing this
M209dwe and M140we models are heavily firmware-dependent.
If internal initialization fails, there are no user-serviceable recovery steps to restore the printer.

I hope this helps.

Hi @360117,

Thanks for your response.

Thank you for following up, and I completely understand how frustrating this situation must be for you. You’ve already done an excellent job going through the standard troubleshooting steps, so let’s try a few additional checks to narrow this down further:

Additional Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Check for Firmware Update via USB
    • If the printer is stuck in error mode and Wi-Fi won’t connect, try updating the firmware manually.
    • Connect the printer directly to your computer using a USB cable.
    • Download the latest firmware for the HP LaserJet M209dwe from  https://support.hp.com/in-en/drivers
    • Run the update tool to ensure the printer firmware is current.
  2. Perform a Cold Reset (NVRAM Reset)
    • Turn off the printer.
    • Hold down the Cancel button while powering the printer back on.
    • Keep holding until the lights flash, which forces a reset of internal memory and clears any corrupted state.
  3. Check Router Settings
    • Ensure your router is not blocking the printer. Sometimes MAC address filtering or firewall rules prevent the printer from joining the network.
    • Try connecting the printer to a different Wi-Fi network (for example, a mobile hotspot) to see if the blinking Wi-Fi light stabilizes.
  4. Service Mode Diagnostic
  • If the printer powers on but immediately shows the solid orange and attention lights, this often indicates a hardware fault in the formatter or logic board.

if the above steps don’t resolve it, the printer may require service .

I hope this helps.
