someone answered my q about the part that is the brains of the printer, but is replacing that part, typically going to fix issues w/ the printer locking up and forgetting settings? i am about to order the replacement formatter pca but the  shipping from china is $$, so i want to be sure i have a decent chance of fixing the issue before i just pay $100 total....

While the formatter may be the brain and might fix your problem, keep in mind that the DC controller and power supply can cause problems as well. The challenge with home office products like this is they do not have the built in diagnostics that Enterprise level products do which makes troubleshooting more difficult. You want to be cautious about buying parts to ensure as stated by @Valsimot they are correct coded and OEM.

The formatter PCA is a printers brain. If possible buy parts locally, you might have some issues after installing overseas parts because of regionalization differences.
