How can I send a wireless fax with my M283fdw laser printer without going through my iMac?

Not sure I understand completely, but the fax board itself is an analog device that would not support wireless. If you subscribe to an internet fax service you should be able to email to the fax service directly from the printer.

Hi,

faxing wirelessly with the device cannot be done, it must be connected to a phone line for its fax hardware to work.

 

You may try the HP Mobile Fax feature within the HP Smart app, to send faxes wirelessly from the app, however, this is currently offered as a trial and will require a plan fee in the future:
