Your mini has limited upgrade options.
There is no discrete video slot (mini pcie) available to upgrade your notebook.T
That means the card you are considering is not compatible.
Risk is not really an issue due to incompatibility considerations.

I purchased the dv7-3085dx Notebook, which can have an optional Fingerprint Reader installed, but the unit I got apparently doesn't have the fingerprint reader installed. (It looks like there is something just above the Touchpad with a little light next to it, but there are no drivers or program links anywhere for a Fingerprint Reader and nothing in the docs about it.)
Question: can I retrofit/upgrade this laptop with the Fingerprint Reader; if so, where can I buy it? Are there any HP tech manuals with instructions for installing it?
Thanks.

The enclosure of your laptop may or may not be the full teatured one. That means that if you really want to do this there is some serious disassembly required and parts to buy. Parts are the sensor, possible the upper portion of the case(where the keyboard and touchpad are and the cable for the sensor.
This is not a task for someone to consider if they a) have no intuitive feel how things fit together b) are not organized and attentive to details. Laptops are quite easy to break and have many tiny parts. 😉
Here is a link to the Service and maintenance manual for your laptop series. The manual has an illustrated parts list and generic disassembly instructions.

Thank you erico.
I read the maintenance manual and, although I'm sure I could retrofit the laptop with the new top cover that includes the fingerprint reader and its circuit board, it looks like the cost and hassle make an external fingerprint reader a more sensible option at this point.
I really appreciate the link to the maintenance manual though; I'm sure it will come in handy at some point.

Hey Erico 😉
I'm working on Compaq Presario V6000 (it's printed on the front upper corner of the screen) on the back label is written V6500 and below the V6500 is symbol V6642EM.I really wish to upgrade my memory from 2GB to 4 or even 8 GB if it's possible and my hard drive from 160 GB to 500GB or 1TB.
Can u help me and tell me is it possible and what parts i should use??
I was using the PNY MEMORY CONFIGURATOR but there wasn't my model.

Thanks, Erico, for the clearly written FAQ and your continuing, easy-to-understand followups.
I have a few questions about an HP Pavilion dv8301nr with an 80 GB HDD. The computer is running fine, but I need more HDD space.
- >My Computer>Properties>Hardware>Device Manager lists "IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers". Does this tell me the HDD is an IDE type?
- In the FAQ, you state "Generally speaking, a replacement IDE/EIDE hard disk can't be larger than 120 GB." If I install a 160 GB EIDE drive, will the dv8301nr ignore the 40 GB difference or not recognize the HDD at all?
- The dv8301nr has a slot for a 2nd HDD. The maintenance/service manual shows a frame to hold the HDD, is that normally included with the HDD or do I need to buy one from HP?
Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hello, I have a Hp Dv7-2000CTO laptop and I would like to swap out the DVD Multi drive and replace it with a Bluray Lightscribe drive. Does anyone know around how much I am looking at for the drive and where to find the part online and where I can get drivers to work with my Vista 64 Home Premium OS that would be great! Thanks......
