Hi,
I currently own an unmodified CQ40 316TU laptop. I would like to upgrade the ram to a 4gb kingston hyperx ram and perhaps the processing unit as well. Could anyone tell me what CPUs are there to upgrade to .

You didn't state which processor is installed. That always helps.
Intel
Intel Core Duo T8600 2.40-GHz processor, 3-MB L2 cache
Intel Core Duo T9400 2.53-GHz processor, 6-MB L2 cache
Intel Core Duo T8400 2.26-GHz processor, 3-MB L2 cache
Intel Core Duo T9600 2.80-GHz processor, 6-MB L2 cache
AMD
AMD Turion Ultra ZM-86 2.4-GHz processor, 2x1-MB L2 cache
AMD Turion Ultra ZM-82 2.2-GHz processor, 2x1-MB L2 cache
AMD Turion Ultra ZM-80 2.1-GHz processor, 2x1-MB L2 cache
AMD Turion RM-70 2.0-GHz processor, 2x512-KB L2 cache
AMD Athlon QL-60 1.9-GHz processor, 2x512-KB L2 cache
AMD Sempron SI-40 2.0-GHz processor, 256-KB L2 cache
each of the above, depending on which type is installed (AMD chipset or Intel chipset) are listed by HP as compatible upgrades.
As far as memory goes...do a search online at the major memory makers websites with your model as the keyword. Kingston is not one that makes memory for your laptop. Try Crucial, OCZ, Geil. The memory makers generally have a memory configurator tool that will help you choose guaranteed compatible RAM. Only purchase guaranteed compatible RAM if you want it to operate as soon as you install the new memory modules.

I have a G71-340 laptop and was wondering if I'd be able to upgrade the hard drive. It came with a 320 GB internal drive and I'd like to double it to 640 GB. Will the hardware inside support it? I have downloaded and flashed the latest version BIOS - F.21.

Sorry about that , I thought the CQ40 316TU was installed with only one type of CPU The T3400 Core duo 2.16 ghz ,with 667mhz Fsb. Anyway would a T8100 , T8300 or T6600 work . I am on a rather tight budget .

I'll think about it ,though I seriously want the kingston hyper x ram .
With many thanks,
Ex.

That should be a viable option.

I contacted an HP tech support person through the online chat and they said from what they could see, my laptop won't support larger than a 320 GB hard drive. For some reason I'm skeptical of that information. But given what they said, do you still think a larger internal hard drive is possible?
Thanks again,
David

I would also be skeptical of that information. Many people, myself included, upgrade their laptops with larger hard drives than they originally shipped with. A 500GB hard drive is very likely to work. I wouldn't try risk ($$) trying one larger than that.

I have a dv2940se laptop -- originally shipped with a 320gb, 5400 hard drive. I'm trying to upgrade to a 500gb 7200rpm drive b/c the old drive went bad. The computer originally came with Vista, and I'm trying to install 7 on the new drive. However, it won't let me boot from DVD. After pushing F9, it shows boot order but only shows "notebook hard drive". When I push F10 (main bios menu), I can go to a page with the boot order and it does show the DVD drive. However, after changing the order, it still doesn't boot from DVD. Is this a compatibility issue with the new Hard Drive or is it something else?

Hi!
I have a wonderful HDX X18-1180US (Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q9000 @ 2.00GHz) with 4G memory and 500GB drive (I believe the drive is a 5400rpm). This is my solid home and business laptop. I do a lot of heavy work on my laptop and was wondering about my upgrade options. I know I can go to 8GB memory and add a second 500GB drive. But I have a couple of questions.
Option 1:
Adding a secondary drive. Can I use a 7200rpm drive with this laptop?
Is it possible to upgrade the CPU? and what options do I have to upgrade to?
How about the video card?
Option 2:
I notice that the new HP Pavilion dv8t frame looks incredible the same as mine. Is it possible to get the board/cpu (Intel i7) and do the motherboard swap? of course I imaging there is memory and possible video card to do too.
Anyways any help is very appreciated.
Thanks!
Tony
