Hi erico..thanx for ur input the other day. However i still need some more help for my HP dv4000. Plzz advise...
1. For the processor upgrade, can i put INTEL MOBILE PENTIUM 770 2.13GHz/2MB/533MHz SL7SL? I currently have a Intel(m)1.6Ghz processor.
2. U said i cud put a max of 2GB SDRAM. Im getting indications that the laptop can only handle 1GB (through these online scanners similar to CRUCIAL website..but not CRUCIAL itself). So what gives?
3. Can i get a graphics card to go along with my HP dv4000?
4. The current hard drive is as follows:
ST94019A
40GB
4200 RPM
Ultra ATA/100 interface
You recommended a 320GB upgrade. Will the following do??
ST90250N1A1AS-RK
250 GB
5400 RPM
SATA 3GB/s interface
Thanx 4 all ur help my friend...ur a lifesaver!

1. For the processor upgrade, can i put INTEL MOBILE PENTIUM 770 2.13GHz/2MB/533MHz SL7SL? NO, the FSB is too fast. I currently have a Intel(m)1.6Ghz processor. The following processor is compatible:Intel Pentium M 770 processor - 2.13GHz (Dothan, 400MHz front side bus, 90nm, 2MB Level-2 cache, FC-PGA2, 478-pin)
2. U said i cud put a max of 2GB SDRAM. Im getting indications that the laptop can only handle 1GB (through these online scanners similar to CRUCIAL website..but not CRUCIAL itself). So what gives? Here is a link to Crucial.
3. Can i get a graphics card to go along with my HP dv4000? Sorry, that is a nogo unless you are willing to go with an external. Take a read of the Notebook (Laptop) Upgrade FAQ. I updated it recently.
4. The current hard drive is as follows:
ST94019A
40GB
4200 RPM

Hello erico and congratulations with this successful thread, it's very helpful and informative.
If it won't give you a drag, I'd like to ask you a question.
What's the limit for my Laptop upgrade? (CPU, RAMs, HDD, GPU)
I've got the guide link, I've also seen that my laptop supports Intel Core i7 840QM Processor, but I'm still not sure about longibity, cooling, voltage etc.
At the moment it's a
Pavilion DV6 3130sa
Intel Core i5 460M
4GB DDR3 RAM (Brand "Micron")
500GB SATA 7,200 RPM
ATI Radeon HD 5470 - 512 MB Dedicated Video Memory
I've just listed main things that I would want to upgrade in first place.
Also, I'm not sure if there are any better HDDs but if there exists something with less RPM due to heat issues that might come from CPU upgrade, so a cooler HDD will compensate for CPU heat. (Better HDDs heatwise/speedwise/capacitywise, unless an SSD or RAID "0", never done that much research on those)
Nevermind the money, let's become dreamers for a second and imagine that I just won a lottery and have loads of spare cash, don't want to buy a new laptop because I'm in love with my current one ^^
Best regards,
Andrew

Thanks. I enjoy helping people get the most out of their notebooks and laptops.
HDD:
I would start with an OCZ Vertex 2 Pro series SSD drive.
400GB would be a great size. The performance increase you will get from a high end SSD will have you believing that you CPU is twice as fast as Windows reports that it is. Your notebook will be almost silent and it will run considerably cooler.
RAM:
You should upgrade to 8GB since your OS is 64-bit. You will need 204-Pin DDR3 SODIMM PC3-10600 (1333Mhz) modules and they need to be guaranteed compatible modules from a major memory maker. You will need two 4GB soDimm modules. Go to www.Crucial.com and use the Crucial system scanner tool to find their recommendations for upgrades.
Graphics:
I would upgrade to the @ati Capilano Pro (ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 6550) graphics with 1024-MB of dedicatedvideo memory (64MB x 16 DDR3 @ 800 MHz x 8 pcs) and 128-MB of sideport video memory. This module is shown as an option in the dv6 Service Guide so it is supported by the BIOS.
If money were no object then I would replace the notebook with
#1 HP Envy 17 3D Edition
#2 Dell Aleinware M17X
#3 Qosmio X500-Q900S
#4 Rock Xtreme 780 X9100
#5 Sager NP9262
Best regards,
erico

Thanks
There are a few issues
I'm afraid that if I remove my current GPU, I won't be able to replace it with another one or even place the same back again.
Am I right or wrong? Because most laptops have something like "sealed" GPUs, once you remove it, you won't put anything back again.
Also, on Intel's website they say that my CPU supports the following memory speed
Memory Types DDR3 800/1066
and doesn't support 1333 Mhz
Or maybe you were talking about i7 Processor, if you were, then I'd like to know more, if it's worth upgrading and will there
be any risks?
Thanks in advance.

I answered the RAM question in the previous post.
Your notebook has a discrete (switchable) graphics module, not an integrated GPU.
I suspect it would not be a bad idea for you to read the FAQ that is on the very first post in this thread. It is PDF document so you will need Adobe Reader to view it. Save it and read it at your leisure.
There isn't any real advantage to upgrading to an i7 Processor in your notebook.
Risks?
Of course there are risks. 😉
You risk owning an expensive paperweight that you used to call your notebook or laptop.
You assume all of the risk.
I don't accept any of the risk of damage to your notebook if you choose to modify it and neither does HP.
If you are considering upgrading your notebook's CPU yourself, then you have to have confidence in yourself and your technical abilities. If that is not the case you will be the proud owner of an expensive paperweight.

erico

HI,
@Horia wrote:Hi Erico,
On this old topic, do the the core duo T2350, 2450, or the Pentium dual T2130 also work if I can't get the core 2 duo T5300?
Much appreciated, thanks
I really can't advise on this when you have given me no notebook identification information to begin with.
Best regards,
erico

Hi, Erico,
Following those directions you gave Venkat 2 yr back I got nowhere, since I have a Presario V5209, sn: CND 6274XTN, pn:EZ427UA., and the only listed processor is the Celeron M410, 1,46 MHz, 533FSB, that I already have.
Bios F24, Motherboard HP 30A8 - 56.48, Chipset i943/940GML rev.03, Southbridge 82801GHM(ICH7-MU) rev.A1.
To another HP Presario user you were suggesting T5300, T5200, T1350, but what about T2350, T2450, T2130 ?. Anyway for other laptops I saw you gave a whole list of possible processors, Please help. I'm in Europe, Romania to be more precise, and here, since I got this laptop in the US and is not sold there they wouldn't touch it even when it was in waranty , so I still never solved a sound card issue.
Your help will be appreciated,
Horia

Unfortunately your notebook has the installed processor listed as the only processor for that notebook. I have been unable to locate a Service and Maintenence guid for the notebook which would list other options.
Sorry to bear bad news.
