HP Pavilion Gaming 15-ak049tx
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi all. I have an issue with my HP Pavilion - namely, the "The selected boot device failed. Press enter to continue." issue where the laptop will consistently fail to start up until it decides to take pity on me.

The good thing is, I've looked around the forums and I noticed that a lot of others have had the same problem.

The bad thing is, my laptop's new - it's barely 4 months old. In fact, I've had this problem occur multiple times when I bought the laptop for the first time - this issue, along with the BSOD. The laptop worked smoothly after numerous attempts to force restart the laptop and I've not had that issue since then... until now.

The other thing is, I'm not tech-savvy. I can't think of anything I could have possibly done to the laptop outside of the usual internet-surfing and mild gaming for it to fail on me like that. So I'm definitely sure that it's not something I did to the laptop.

My problem now is.. how do I handle this situation? Is there a quick-fix or will I have to send it for servicing under my warranty?

Hi @Wyndie,

Thank you for showing your interest in HP Support Forums. As I understand you are getting an error message on your HP notebook and I'd be glad to help you with this,

Please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices, as these could cause some issues. Then try and restart the Notebook.

Have you connected the Notebook to an external monitor or TV? Please try this step first to see if the display on the external Monitor or TV is black also.

Let's try these steps here:

Perform a Hard Reset

Attempt a Bios Recovery

Run the extensive test on the hard drive from F2

For more steps, please follow the steps listed in the support document - Click here HP PCs - Error: The Boot Selection Failed Because a Required Device Is Inaccessible (Windows 8, 7) - It is for Windows 8 but will work with Windows 10 also.

Depending on the test results, If the test passes, I would suggest you perform a system recovery using the partition available on your PC. Doing this will set your computer back to the original factory conditions. So, if you have any important data please go ahead and back it up. If this option fails, which means either the partition is corrupted or system file is missing.

Link to perform System recovery: Click here

The only other way to install Windows would be to order the recovery media for your laptop and using the recovery media you can install Windows. You can check if the recovery media is available online on www.hp.com/drivers by entering the exact model no. of your laptop. To find the exact model no. click here: http://hp.care/2bygf7l

Otherwise, you could also reach HP phone support to order the recovery media. Please fill in the product details to get the tech support number.

Please use the following link to create yourself a case number, then call and it may help speed up the call process:

Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/

Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect

Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"

Hi @Jeet_singh,

Thanks for your advice.

I've performed a hard reset and ran the extensive test from F2. I skipped the step to attempt a bios recovery because the the steps boggled my brains and I don't have time to figure them out slowly. Also, the extensive test ran on loop for about 11 hours and it passed, so I will perform the system recovery procedure sometime later.

As for now, I have two questions.

  1. Is the bios recovery step necessary or can I just bypass it altogether since the instructions look very confusing?
  2. Is this "selected boot device failed" error going to be a regular occurrence? During my laptop's very short lifespan this problem has cropped up at least 3 times already. Is there a more permanent fix to it and/or would this be covered under my warranty?

Hi @Wyndie,

You're Welcome,

I appreciate your time and efforts,

  1. Is the bios recovery step necessary or can I just bypass it altogether since the instructions look very confusing? Answering to your question, If the Bios on your Notebook has been corrupted due to some reason that is when you can perform the steps suggested in the previous post to restore the bios,
  2. Is this "selected boot device failed" error going to be a regular occurrence? During my laptop's very short lifespan this problem has cropped up at least 3 times already. Is there a more permanent fix to it and/or would this be covered under my warranty? Answering to this question, No, Once you follow the steps suggested this should fix the issue for once and all.

Please take your time and get back to me with the results,

I'll be awaiting your response and would be glad to help.
