I have 2 HP wireless printers in my home. One accepts the password, but this 5740 does not. Please advise. Thanks!

Hi @LisaSchuster

Welcome to the HP Support Community. I'd be happy to assist you.

Is the printer not accepting a wireless password or administrator password?

Let's try a power reset on the printer

Reset the product

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  • Reconnect the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn the printer on. HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

 Then try entering the password.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Regrettably, this suggestion did not fix my problem.  The error box reads that this printer requires a WPA2 password. The most frustrating part is that it was working several days ago with the same password. Any help? Thank you so much!!

What type of encryption are you using on your router?

Also, the printer will only connect to a 2.4 GHz network. /hence make sure the router network mode is set to 2.4 GHz.

Thank you! How do I ascertain what encryption my router is using?

You could check with the network providers on the admin page of the router.
