iPad networks with the HP Office Jet Pro 8620 but printer says there is a paper mismatch w/paper tray containing 4X6 photo paper, iPad remains in letter, won’t option out of it. Prints using letter paper in the printer though. Seems like an Apple issue?

Welcome to HP forums, I see that you are getting a paper mismatch error.
AirPrint does not have the option to change the paper size. If your printer has a paper sensor, AirPrint automatically adjusts the print size to the detected paper. If your printer has a control panel with the option to change paper sizes, you can change the paper size and the iOS device detects the new size. The printout is then scaled accordingly.
You can watch this YouTube video to change the paper size settings on the printer display:- Click here
(Note: Though this video is for different for printer model, these steps should help you in fixing the issue with your printer)

Thanks, but this did not solve the issue, as was explained in a separate email.
This 8620 ignores the paper size even when changed on the web using its IP address.
The printer panel never asks if the paper was changed.
Tried iCloud email but the same result, "...paper size detected does not match...."
Any other suggestions for this appreciated.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Sandy: Thanks for solving my problem. It was the updating of the firm ware that did it,
but all photos printed on 4x6 photo paper on the first try after the printer updated
the firm ware from ‘settings’. Now I have to buy more HP printer ink, b/c of you...
just kidding...thanks for you courtesy and competent help.
