Printer suddenly quit printing black. I installed a new HP cartridge and cleaned the head with no luck. Ran the printer diagnostics with no successful result. Both the printer and laptop confirm the ink level at 100%. Colors print fine, but no black. Can anyone advise the solution to this problem?

Hi @MAR88,
Thanks for stopping by the HP Support Forums! 🙂 Good day. I read your post about printing issues with the printer not printing in black. I will be delighted to assist you here. 🙂
Stupendous diagnosis and spectacular analysis of the issue before posting. Kudos to you on that score. It is always a privilege to work with technical specialists like you. 🙂
We greatly value your relationship with HP. You are a valued HP customer and we appreciate you greatly for doing business with HP. I take it as a privilege to share this platform with you.:)
For better clarity and to assist you better, I would require more information regarding this:
- Did you try to make a few copies in black directly from the printer without any communication from the computer?
- Have you checked with different color cartridges?
For starters, please try to make a few black copies directly from the printer without any intervention from the computer. Use both the flatbed and ADF options.
Steps:
- Please try to make a few copies directly from the printer without any intervention from the computer. Please place the required document face down on the flatbed scanner and touch the copy button. If it copies fine, then the issue could be software related.
If it fails to copy, then try with different cartridges. If it still fails then the printer has a hardware issue and needs to be serviced. To do this, please contact HP phone support by following these steps:
Step 1. Open link: www.hp.com/contacthp/
Step 2. Enter Product number or select to auto detect
Step 3. Scroll down to "Still need help? Complete the form to select your contact options"
Step 4. Scroll down and click: HP contact options - click on Get phone number, Case number and phone number appear.
They will be happy to assist you immediately.
If the unit is under warranty, the manufacturer’s warranty will take care of replacements or repairs.
If it copies fine, then please perform all the steps from this link: http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Photosmart-6510-e-All-in-One-Printer-series---B2/5058334/mode...
Hope this helps. Let me know how this goes. I genuinely hope the issue gets resolved without hassles and the unit works great. 🙂 Please reach out for any issues and I'll be there to assist you. 🙂
To simply say thanks, please click the "Thumbs Up" button to give me a Kudos to appreciate my efforts to help.
If this helps, please mark this as “Accepted Solution” as it will help several others with the same issue to get it resolved without hassles. 🙂
Take care now and have a splendid week ahead. 🙂

David, thanks for you help with this. I followed your suggested steps--all I received is a notice that HP does not service this printer anymore (I think I purchased it in 2012--it has not seen heavy usage, however). Any other suggestions you can offer will be most appreciated.
FYI: the copier will not copy in black ink, either (in spite of the printer showing that the black ink cartridge is full). Also, other colors print fine.
