I have exactly the same problem as:
All drivers / BIOS are up-to-date. Sent it back during warranty period; got new speakers, didn't fix the problem. It's not hardware, it's clearly software based on the following:
One interesting further piece of info: Every time I run the Audio diagnostics from the HP Support Assistant, the problem is corrected for about 20 seconds, then re-appears (right speaker goes silent). Run it again, I get another 20 seconds of operation, etc, etc.
