I have an 'audio device not installed' error all of a sudden. I assume it is a driver issue but I cannot find appropriate drivers for my machine. Does anyone know where to get them?

I have tried various others but without success.

@AdamCP, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

The “Audio device not installed” error typically points to a missing or corrupted driver. Here’s how you can resolve it:

Check Device Manager

  1. Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
    • If you see a yellow exclamation mark or “Unknown device,” that confirms a driver issue.
  3. Right-click the audio device (or unknown device) and choose Uninstall device.
  4. Restart your PC.

Install the Correct Audio Driver

For your model, the correct audio driver is usually Realtek High Definition Audio. You can download it from HP’s official support page: Official HP® Support

  1. Select Windows 11 as your OS (if not auto-detected).
  2. Under Driver-Audio, download and install the Realtek High-Definition (HD) Audio Driver.
  3. Restart your PC after installation.

Run HP Support Assistant (Optional but Recommended)

HP Support Assistant can automatically detect and fix driver issues.

  1. Download it from here: HP Support Assistant | HP® Support
  2. Install and run it.
  3. Go to My devices > Updates, and install any recommended audio or BIOS updates.

Windows Troubleshooter (If Needed)

  1. Go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
  2. Run the Playing Audio troubleshooter.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!

Hi,

There is no audio device listed in device manager (aside from a seperate bluetooth headset).

I have installed the Realtek driver but no change.

I have downloaded and run the HP Support Assistant but when I click audio there is no action.

I have also run HP Hardware Diagnostics but it cannot run audio tests as 'device not found'.

I cannot access drivers specifically for the model as they are no longer present on the HP site.

@AdamCP, Thanks for the update! Since the audio device is not listed in Device Manager, and HP Support Assistant and Diagnostics can't detect it either, this points to a low-level issue—either with the audio chipset, BIOS settings, or driver compatibility. Here's a more advanced set of steps to help resolve this:

Clean Install of Realtek Audio Driver

Steps:

  • Open Device Manager.
  • Expand System Devices and look for anything related to Intel Smart Sound Technology or Realtek.
  • Right-click and Uninstall any audio-related entries.
  • Reboot your PC.
  • Run the downloaded installer.
  • Reboot again.

Check BIOS Settings

Sometimes the audio device is disabled in BIOS.

  1. Restart your PC and press Esc or F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS.
  2. Look for Advanced > Device Configuration or similar.
  3. Ensure Audio or Onboard Audio is Enabled.
  4. Save and exit.

Install Intel Chipset & ME Drivers

Missing chipset drivers can prevent audio hardware from being detected.

Download and install these from HP driver page: Official HP® Support

Look for:

  • Intel Chipset Driver
  • Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI)

Use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI

If you haven’t already tried the UEFI version, it runs outside Windows and may detect hardware better.

Download from here: HP PC Hardware Diagnostics | HP® Support

Create a USB stick and boot into diagnostics.

Run the Audio Test.

If All Else Fails

If none of the above works, it may be:

  • A hardware failure of the audio chipset.
  • A Windows update that broke compatibility.

You can try:

  • System Restore to a point before the issue started.
  • Clean Windows 11 reinstall (if feasible).

I hope this helps!

Take care and have a great day.

Hi,

I've done the Realtek re-install.

I could not find a single audio related option in the BIOS settings to enable or otehrwise.

I ran the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI and teh test worked. I could hear the tones.

I cannot find the Intel Chipset & ME Drivers I need. Everytime I go to the link I have to select my machine and it says no drivers availible. Do you have direct links?
