Audio does not seem to switch between onboard speakers and plugged in headphones very well at all. Sound continues to play when headphones are unplugged and the audio plays through the speakers. But plugging in headphones does not make the audio work at all. The audio is still playing but no sound is made unless the drivers for audio are disabled and the enabled and even then that doesn't always work. What can I do to fix this issue because it is very inconvenient

Thanks in advance

Appreciate you trying the steps. Don't worry, I'm here to help! To better assist you - May I have the exact model name of the computer? Refer to this link for steps to find the product details. (Ensure not to share the serial number, email, phone number, etc.)

While you respond to that, let's try these steps -

Step 1 Run Audio troubleshooter -

1) In Windows, type "Find and Fix audio" into Search, or right-click the speaker icon on the taskbar and select Troubleshoot sound problems.
2) Select Find and fix audio playback problems or Find and fix audio recording problems from the Search results.

Step 2 Re-install the Audio drivers -

1) In Windows, search for and open Device Manager.
2) Double-click Sound, video and game controllers.
3) Right click on the Audio drivers and click on uninstall.
4) Restart the computer.

Also, try updating the computer -

Step 3 Windows Updates troubleshooter -

Click on this link to run Windows Updates troubleshooter.

Step 4 Windows Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open Windows Updates.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Step 5 HP Support Assistant Updates -

1) In the search box, type and open HP Support Assistant.
2) Check for updates.
3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Hope this helps!

Hello, Thanks for the quick reply.

I have a hp spectre x360 convertible 15-df0xxx

I have tried these steps however none seem to consistently work. The only solution I have found is to just have the headphones plugged in when starting up the computer. This is obviously a problem when I take my headphones out to use with my phone when on the move, then plug them back into my laptop. The speakers have no problem playing when the headphones are unplugged. I have tried with multiple sets of headphones with the same problem. Anything more you can suggest?

Thank you for your help so far.

Thanks for letting me know. I'd suggest you test the hardware -

1) Shutdown the computer.
2) Turn the computer back on again and repeatedly tap on the ESC until a Startup menu appears.
3) Press F2 once.
4) Go to Component test.
5) From the list, run the Audio test.

Keep me posted.

Hello Again,

Audio Test works fine, I even tried unplugging then plugging them back in and no problem whatsoever.

However, I continued to boot after the test to find out that they no longer wanted to output sound of any sort.

What is going on?

I tried the troubleshooter and tried the component test. My headphones are not being detected at all. It says "Please connect your headphone" at the component test. The headphones however are working fine. I've tried two different headphones and both of them work well with my mobile phone.
