HP ENVY - 17t-s100 CTO

I connected a new Dell P3421W monitor to my HP Envy laptop via an HDMI cable.  The monitor displays the laptop screen just fine.  I have a Dell soundbar hooked to the monitor via USB.   I am unable to have sound delivered to the monitor.  The sound settings on the laptop do not show the monitor or any HDMI device; only the basic laptop speakers.  All of the drivers are up to date according to HP.  The cable came with the new monitor.

What am I missing?

Hi @Trooper55,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

There could be several reasons why the audio is not being delivered to the monitor through HDMI. Here are troubleshooting steps you can try:

Check Audio Output Settings:

  • Right-click on the speaker icon in the system tray and select "Open Sound settings."
  • Under the "Output" section, make sure the correct output device is selected. In this case, it should be the monitor or HDMI output.

Update Audio Drivers:

  • Even though you mentioned that all drivers are up to date according to HP, it's worth double-checking the audio drivers. Go to the HP official website, enter your laptop model, and download the latest audio drivers. Install them and restart your laptop.

Check Windows Sound Settings:

  • Right-click on the speaker icon in the system tray and select "Open Sound settings."
  • Scroll down and click on "App volume and device preferences." Make sure the correct output device is selected for the applications you're using.

Check Monitor Settings:

  • On your Dell P3421W monitor, check if there are any specific audio settings related to HDMI. Some monitors have separate audio settings that need to be configured.

Check HDMI Cable:

  • Ensure that the HDMI cable is securely connected to both the laptop and the monitor. Try using a different HDMI cable to rule out any potential cable issues.

Monitor Firmware/Software Update:

  • Check if there are any firmware or software updates available for your Dell P3421W monitor. Updating the monitor's firmware may resolve compatibility issues.

Try a Different HDMI Port:

  • If your laptop has multiple HDMI ports, try connecting to a different port to see if the issue persists.

Windows Troubleshooter:

  • Run the built-in Windows Troubleshooter for audio problems. Right-click on the speaker icon, select "Troubleshoot sound problems," and follow the on-screen instructions.

BIOS/UEFI Settings:

  • Access the BIOS/UEFI settings during the laptop's boot process and check if there are any relevant audio settings. Ensure that HDMI audio output is enabled.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.-
