viktoriagrindle:
My IDT High Definition Audio CODEC panel only has a "disable" button (along with "Driver Detail", Update Driver", "Roll back Driver" and "Uninstall").
I don't want to click on the disable button unless I see an "enable" button.
Does the "disable" convert to "enable" when pressed????
Please advise.

BigBuds:
It's irritating, I know, but I may have another interim workaround for you until the techies at HP and/or MS have this figured out:
Through trial and error I've discovered that if you start the Windows Media Player and start a song from your music while in the early reboot (the earlier the better), you'll get sound. I've done this quite a few times already and so far it has worked every time. If I let the reboot finish without doing that, it becomes a 50/50 proposition as to whether or not I have sound.
Then hit pause on the song and minimize it.
Keep Windows Media Player active and the song paused and you'll have sound for everything else
Let me know f that works for you as well

ya the restart workd a few times... then yesterday I rebooted after the loss of sound and i got the windows 8 blue screen of death... computer will not come back. this is the second hard drive this thing has gone through in the 2 months i've had it. I'm done with this computer. I'm demanding a refund or it be replaced with a current model Envy. Can anyone confirm if this sound bug is happening in the newest model Envy like the 360 ir the 15-K020us? if it is, I will be getting another brand.

So I did a bit more research and it looks like even though the whole disable and re-enable thing is working temporarily it's not a permanent fix and there is clearly a serious compatibility issue with the IDT CODEC and certain laptop models. For this reason a lot of people are choosing to uninstall the IDT CODEC alltogether which originally came in a Windows update. You will still have audio but it reverts back to the default HP audio which is not as good as the IDT one, but still better than frying your computer. I just realized I have recently been getting blue screens also that I couldn't pinpoint the cause of and now I think it must be because of the IDT audio. I am going to uninstall it. I will let you know how that goes. There are instructions somewhere in this forum about uninstalling IDT audio and letting your HP recognize the default HP sound drives.

Hi - I just wanted to confirm that the only way to solve this problem is to uninstall the HP drivers?
Is that really right? Is that a solution or a workaround? Anyway, I suppose I can live with that since I don't use Beats, but isn't that a bad tradeoff that you have to give up something for getting basic functionality of the laptop to work?

Hi, yes it is definently an unfair tradeoff, and I am unsure if it is the only solution or not. I am choosing to do so simply because I am getting blue screens and other people with this issue have even fried their computer and I don't want to risk it. However it seems the people who chose to uninstall the IDT audio are free from the sound issue. If you do choose to uninstall it or not, I am sure Microsoft will work towards fixing this eminent problem and a more compatibl IDT driver will be available for update in the near future, so reverting back to the HP sound driver will hopefully only be temporary. Anyway, with that said, I am definently NOT an expert, haha, uninstalling the IDT audio is just what I'm choosing to do because I don't want to risk damaging my laptop.
