Laptop HP Pavilion 15-eh0xxx
Windows 11 22H2
My audio is playing at max volume whenever it is playing through the speakers regardless of where the volume slider is. Headphones work fine for some bizarre reason. Listed below are the things I've tried that have failed to resolve the issue.
- Rollback of Realtek Driver (Will no longer allow me to do this)
- Uninstall and reinstall of Realtek
- Attempted to download the driver manually from HP using it's install assist program that then got stuck in an endless loop and failed to do anything.
- Windows updated
I'm at my wits end and don't know where else to turn. This started last year and initially a driver rollback sorted it but in the last couple of months it has broken again and this time nothing works. I'd be very grateful for any help.
Thanks.

Hi @Hannah158,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If the audio on your HP Pavilion 15 laptop is playing at maximum volume through the speakers only, you can try the following steps to troubleshoot the issue.
- Adjust the volume settings: Check the volume control on your laptop and ensure it is not set to maximum. You can typically find the volume control in the system tray (bottom-right corner) or by pressing the volume keys on your keyboard.
- Check audio settings: Right-click the volume icon in the system tray and select "Open Sound settings." Verify that the output device is set to the correct speakers and not an external device or headphones.
- Test with headphones: Plug in a pair of headphones into the audio jack and check if the audio plays at maximum volume through the headphones as well. If the issue is only with the speakers, it could indicate a hardware problem.
- Update audio drivers: Outdated or incorrect audio drivers can sometimes cause audio issues. Visit the HP support website, enter your laptop's model number, and download the latest audio drivers for your specific model. Install the drivers and restart your laptop.
- Check application settings: If the issue occurs only with specific applications or media players, check their individual volume settings. Ensure that the volume within those applications is not set to maximum.
- Perform a system restart: Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary software glitches that may be causing the audio issue.
- Reset audio settings: In the Windows search bar, type "Sound" and open the Sound settings. Under the "Playback" tab, select the speakers and click on the "Properties" button. In the properties window, go to the "Enhancements" tab and check "Disable all enhancements." Click "Apply" and then "OK."
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

A lot of what you responded with I already addressed in the initial post.
- Headphones are not affected
- Hardware is not the problem as initially I was able to rollback the drivers and this fixed the problem until a subsequent update broke them again and I am blocked from rolling back the drivers again as the option is greyed out.
- I tried reinstalling the Realtek driver both automatically and via the HP site. Automatically installing the driver did nothing and the download through the HP site refuses to install and doesn't work.
- Turning down the volume was, of course, the first thing I tried. Whether it's set to 2% or 100% it stills plays at maximum.
- This is a reoccurring problem for some people on Windows 11 however none of what solved their issues has helped in my particular experience aside from rolling back the drivers the first time.
